Those with power, even if the force of their actions is not exhausted, are not bound by samsara (cyclic existence), because there is no fault of samsara. **Refuting Arguments by Establishing Oneself in Compassion** Secondly, one might ask: Why do those free from attachment not remain for a long time for the sake of sentient beings with compassion? The Hearers (Shravakas) and Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas), for example, do not have great effort to remain for a long time for the sake of sentient beings, because their compassion is weak. However, those Great Vehicle (Mahayana) noble beings always abide for the sake of other sentient beings, because they possess great compassion, the cause for continuously abiding for the sake of others. **Refuting the Assertion That There Is Still Existence After the First Noble Path** Secondly, refuting the assertion that there is still existence after the first noble path: If the view of the perishable collection (satkayadrishti) is the cause of existence, then on the first noble path, the path of seeing (darshana-marga), there should be no more existence, because one is free from the view of the collection. Answer: Those who have entered the stream (Srotapannas) do not cease to have existence simply because they are without the view of the collection, because although they have abandoned the imputed view of the collection, they have not abandoned the innate one. If they had abandoned that, then how could those who have entered the stream still have existence? Because they have abandoned the innate view of the collection. Why have they not abandoned the innate view of the collection? Because those who have entered the stream have not abandoned it, because they still have the desire 'May I be happy, may I not suffer.' This is pervasive, because at that time, whatever thought arises of 'I' is the innate view of sentient beings. Furthermore, those who have entered the stream should not run after happiness, because they have abandoned the innate view of the collection. This is pervasive, because without seeing 'I', one is not attached to oneself. Without craving for oneself, one does not run after happiness. **Refuting the View That 'Self' Is the Agent of Bondage and Liberation** Fourth, refuting the view that 'self' is the agent of bondage and liberation, there are two aspects: refuting that the permanent self is the agent, and refuting that the inexpressible is the agent. **Refuting That the Permanent Self Is the Agent** The first view: Sentient beings have a 'self' that is the binder and the liberator, because the 'self' is bound by the suffering of samsara and can be liberated from it, just as Lhas Byin (Devadatta) is bound by iron chains and then liberated from them. If one thinks so, then how can bondage exist for the permanent self? It is impossible, because it is not the cause of suffering. This is pervasive, because the bondage of suffering is necessarily the cause of the arising of suffering. Furthermore, for the permanent self, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
