Therefore, it is reasonable to strive for the benefit of (sentient beings). As long as I have not overcome attachment to self, and as long as the aggregates (Sanskrit: skandha, the five aggregates) attached to self are completely tormented by suffering, as long as I cling to suffering, and do not abide in the nature of happiness, then nominally, I am a samsaric being. Although the self of the liberated one does not actually exist, in order to destroy the inverted clinging to self and what belongs to self, in order to nominally establish that I am striving when the aggregates strive, the key meaning lies in this. Apart from the respected (Buddhist schools), all three schools of realists of their own tradition believe that I, pudgala (Sanskrit: pudgala, person), sentient beings, and purusha (Sanskrit: puruṣa, another name for pudgala) do not exist in reality, therefore bondage and liberation are not reasonable in reality, while the aggregates exist in reality, therefore bondage and liberation are reasonable in reality. Nominally, it is I who am performing bondage and liberation, because when the aggregates suffer, I cling to the fact that I am suffering, and when the aggregates are liberated from suffering, I cling to the fact that I am liberated from suffering. The respected ones and non-Buddhists believe that I exist in reality, therefore bondage and liberation are reasonable in reality. Dividing the aggregates and self into two types, real existence and non-real existence, and nominally establishing that I am performing actions and experiencing the results when the aggregates are performing actions and experiencing the results, is a useful branch in many situations. Debate on the Reason for Liberation The third part is divided into two points: refuting that those who have abandoned desire have no dwelling place; refuting that there is no subsequent existence in the first bhumi of the noble path. Refuting that Those Who Have Abandoned Desire Have No Dwelling Place The first part is divided into three points: explaining the two reasons why those who have abandoned desire abide; refuting the debate about the reasons; refuting the debate about abiding. Explaining the Two Reasons Why Those Who Have Abandoned Desire Abide The first point: Those who have self-grasping abide in samsara because they abide by the power of craving, so how do those who have abandoned desire abide in samsara? The pudgala who has abandoned desire, you temporarily have a reason to abide in samsara, because you have two situations: the Mahayana noble ones abide in samsara because of great compassion; or the Hinayana arhats abide in samsara because of the power of past karma, because they believe that the past karma has already abandoned the aggregates of this life, and it is temporarily impossible to reverse. As it is said in the Jataka: 'One should not rejoice in death, nor should one rejoice in life, like a tamed ox, I wait for the time.' Refuting the Debate About the Reasons The second part is divided into two points: the meaning of karma --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refuting the argument about love. Refuting the argument about the meaning of love. Refuting the argument about the meaning of karma. Firstly, if a desireless one remains in samsara due to karma, will his karma connect him to another existence as well? Answer: The karma of a desireless one who has transcended the craving for existence does not have the ability to throw him into another existence, because the co-operative condition, namely craving, has been exhausted. Refuting the argument about the meaning of love. Secondly, desireless one, you must necessarily hold that sentient beings exist, because you have compassion. Answer: For those who directly know the truth of suffering, namely impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, the arising of compassion is not a view of self related to sentient beings, because there are no contrary factors such as hatred, and it is a mental phenomenon that follows the previous habituation of compassionate action. Furthermore, desireless one, you will necessarily become desirous, because you have compassion. Answer: The love of a desireless one is not desire, because it is merely being aware of the suffering of others without distorted clinging to the object, so you will be born. This is universal, because for the aggregates of phenomena that are not of the nature of permanence, happiness, self, and selfhood, desire arises from clinging to permanence etc. apart from the nature of that object. Furthermore, desireless one, if harm is done to the object of love, you will necessarily become angry, because you have love. Answer: Desireless one, the proximate cause, namely harm done to the object of love, does not cause anger, because ignorance is the root of evil, of hatred etc., and this is clinging to sentient beings, and this does not exist. Therefore, the love of a desireless one is considered to be without the evil of hatred, because it does not arise from the root of ignorance. Refuting the argument about existence. The third part has two sections: Refuting the argument about existence by karma. Refuting the argument about existence by love. Refuting the argument about existence by karma. Firstly, if a desireless one has a body produced by karma, then he will not be liberated from samsara. Answer: The desireless one exists due to karma, but this does not mean that he is not liberated from samsara, because the previous karmic force that manifests the aggregates of this life has been exhausted, the body has receded, and there is no craving, so it will not connect to another existence. Any desireless one who remains in samsara... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
