Q: Is it a cause or not a cause? A: The self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:I) has the property that you are constant and one, therefore it is impossible to produce multiple fruits at different times, i.e., sequentially. Because the constant is not a producer of fruit. Furthermore, constant things such as the self have the property that they cannot be the cause of suffering, etc. Even if the causes of suffering, etc., gather, because you are not present, suffering, etc., will not cease, because you do not have the ability to stop suffering, etc. This is a universal rule: even if the causes of some fruit gather, if some condition is missing, the fruit will not arise. Therefore, from the gathered causes, other causes can be inferred, otherwise it cannot. Now, to explain the truth of the origin (藏文:ཀུན་འབྱུང་,梵文天城体:samudaya,梵文罗马拟音:samudaya,汉语字面意思:arising) by establishing suffering and its causes. Second, to explain the truth of the origin by establishing suffering and its causes. Here, the 'Ornament of Clear Realization' (Abhisamayalankara) and its followers also divide the other three truths into four types, and Lha-sa-ba reveals the three aspects of the cause of the origin, the cessation of the truth of cessation, and the path of the truth of the path, thus completing the classification of the remaining three aspects. If explained according to the latter, there are three: establishing suffering and its causes; refuting the misconception of taking the cause as something else; revealing that the main factor of the cause is craving. Establishing suffering and its causes. First, it is divided into two: establishing having a cause by occasional arising; refuting the reasons for establishing no cause. Establishing having a cause by occasional arising. First, this suffering has the property that it is proven to have a cause, because it arises occasionally. This is a universal rule: if there is no cause, it will either always exist or never exist, it will not be occasional. Because if there is no cause, it does not need to depend on other conditions. Refuting the reasons for establishing no cause. Secondly, some people, namely those who claim self-nature as the cause, say: just as the sharpness of thorns, etc., is without cause, these sufferings will also arise without cause. This is unreasonable. The sharpness of thorns, etc., and the truth of suffering have the property that they all have a cause, because there is a place where other previous things follow or stop. This is a universal rule: whatever other previous thing exists, depending on it, whatever other subsequent thing arises or whatever other previous thing changes, i.e., stops, the subsequent thing will also stop, i.e., change, therefore, the place where the subsequent thing follows or stops is the cause of the subsequent thing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the sake of complete expression. So, is the touch that is the objective condition of eye consciousness the cause of that eye consciousness? Because other external things are the place where that eye consciousness follows and departs? The touch that is the objective condition of eye consciousness, for seeing, that is, for eye consciousness, is the cause, that is, the indirect cause, because it is the very cause of the form that is the objective condition of eye consciousness. Showing that craving is the main factor of cause Second, in this way, suffering has been established as having a cause, and it does not arise from causes of different kinds. For example, suffering, it is not possible to arise from Ishvara and the permanent chief, etc., because in general, all permanent things have been denied as causes, because permanent things do not have the ability to produce results. Showing that craving is the main factor of cause Third, there are three points: Showing that craving is the main condition; quoting scriptures to prove it; craving alone is the cause that is explained. Showing that craving is the main condition First, because suffering is not without a cause, nor is it caused by a permanent cause, therefore, craving, which is called the origin of affliction and includes the desire for body and enjoyment contained in existence (srid pa), is the cause of suffering. Because, taking humans as an example, all the special characteristics of objects that beings grasp, that is, slightly take, are caused by the thought of wanting to obtain that object, that is, craving. If the desire for existence is the cause of suffering, then in the sutra, 'What is the noble truth of the origin of suffering? It is this craving, which leads to rebirth, accompanied by joy and attachment, and delights in this and that, such as desire craving, existence craving, and non-existence craving.' This contradicts the statement that all three cravings are causes. This is not contradictory, because what is said is existence craving. Because beings want to obtain happiness and want to abandon suffering, the craving to take and abandon is called desire craving and non-existence craving respectively, which is the difference between the general and the specific. This is the view of the gods. Shakya believes that pursuing the desire realm is desire craving, pursuing the upper two realms is existence craving, and wanting to abandon suffering is non-existence craving, which is a mixture of Abhidharma's view, but it is not the original meaning of the sutra. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
