Therefore, ordinary beings, these three types of craving are the basis for being born in existence, i.e., samsara, because due to craving that clings to self, they perceive non-blissful contaminated bliss as bliss, and because of craving for bliss, they become completely immersed in and acquire all good and bad things. To establish this, here are scriptural proofs: There are two proofs: direct and refuting arguments. Direct Proof: The first is that since the birth of those without attachment is not seen, the teachers say that attachment is the cause of birth. As teacher Vasubandhu said, 'Because the birth of those without attachment is not seen, therefore, birth has attachment as its cause.' Refuting Arguments: The second is, the Lokayata says, 'Then, the body will also arise from attachment, since attachment without a body is not seen,' which is similar. To this, we assert that the previous body is merely the cause of the later attachment, because we accept it as the condition or co-operative cause of the later attachment. 'If so, this contradicts the previous denial of it being the cause.' To this, we assert that you did not previously deny that the previous body is merely the cause of the later attachment, but only excluded it as the immediate cause of the later attachment. If, following the reasoning that 'since the birth of those without attachment is not seen, attachment is the cause of birth,' one asserts that since attachment without a body is not seen, the body is also the cause of attachment, then the Lokayata would be contradicting themselves, because previously you had asserted that there is no previous or subsequent birth, but later you said that the body and attachment are the cause of the previous attachment and the later body. If attachment is not the cause of the body, because the body and birth occur simultaneously, because you see the body being born, but did not see attachment before that, then the body is also not the cause of attachment, because attachment and the body occur simultaneously. If you accept this, then attachment is not without a cause, and since it does not arise from the body, it is established that it arises from a cause of the same kind. Thus, the first attachment in this life must have been established as having a similar cause before it, because it is born from a cause of the same kind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone asks, 'Isn't it contradictory that the 'Treasure Trove of Earth Arising' states that 'birth' has three causes?' The answer is no. Ignorance (Sanskrit: avidya) is a dharma; although it is also a cause of rebirth, it is not mentioned here because it is not necessarily a factor that propels samsara. Craving (Sanskrit: trsna) is a dharma; there is a reason why you are said to be a cause here, because you are the factor that promotes or urges the continuation of the aggregates of samsara, and you are the immediate cause of 'birth'. Karma is also a dharma; you are not suitable to be said to be a cause here, because even if you exist, if you lack the moisture of craving, there is no guarantee that there will be 'birth'. Therefore, these treatises generally establish suffering and its causes, and by excluding causes of different kinds, they establish causes of the same kind. Among ignorance, craving, and karma, the latter two do not necessarily produce suffering only in the next life. Therefore, here, craving, as the key factor in achieving the goal, is established as the cause, which is the focus of this passage. Next, by establishing the cessation of suffering, the Truth of Cessation is explained. Third, explaining the Truth of Cessation by establishing the cessation of suffering is divided into four parts: establishing liberation from suffering; refuting disputes about the liberator; refuting disputes about the mode of liberation; and refuting the accomplishment of bondage and liberation through the self. First, establishing liberation from suffering: The main cause of suffering—craving—is a dharma; it is not eternal, because it has causes such as ignorance. This is universally applicable, because causes such as ignorance may have obstacles or incomplete conditions, etc. Second, refuting disputes about the liberator: Some say, 'Considering that there is a real self, sentient beings are dharmas; they cannot be liberated from samsara, because they are of the nature of samsara, just as fire cannot be liberated from warmth.' To this, this inference does not harm Buddhists, because the self (Sanskrit: atman) that Buddhists acknowledge does not exist, so the premise and reason are not established. Then, how should samsara and liberation be established? Merely the collection of aggregates of suffering, and the continued existence of its causes, is called samsara; and merely cutting off the causes, so that they no longer arise, is called liberation. If someone says, 'The person (Sanskrit: purusa) is a dharma; he should not strive to be liberated from samsara, because neither the samsaric being nor the liberated being has a self.' If viewed from the ultimate truth, this is acceptable; but if viewed from the conventional truth, this reason is not established. Because, the person is a dharma; in the conventional truth, he strives to be liberated from samsara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
