Question: If the mindstream (after realizing emptiness) reverts when it loses its antidote, will it regress? Answer: No. Because through familiarizing oneself with egolessness, the mindstream that has completely ceased faults is like solid gold, even if it loses its antidote, it will not generate faults again. This is because it has transformed into the nature of the antidote—realizing egolessness—therefore it will not lose the antidote. Just as ashes do not turn back into wood, even if the antidote is lost, it does not necessarily mean that what it has abandoned will regress. The following is the argument for establishing egolessness as an antidote: Second, the argument for establishing egolessness as an antidote is divided into three points: explaining that realizing egolessness is the antidote to self-grasping; explaining that realizing egolessness is the antidote to craving; and besides that, there is no other way to counteract afflictions and karma. Explaining that realizing egolessness is the antidote to self-grasping: The first point is further divided into three parts: explaining that self-grasping is the root of samsara; establishing the argument that it is the root; therefore, advising to cut off this root. Explaining that self-grasping is the root of samsara: First, why does realizing egolessness become the antidote to samsara? Because self-grasping is the root of samsara, and realizing egolessness directly contradicts the way self-grasping clings. Why is self-grasping the root? Because self-grasping is established as the root of samsara. If someone clings to the aggregates as 'I', then he will always cling to and crave this 'I', and as long as there is strong craving for 'I', then this person who craves 'I' will wander in samsara. Because from clinging to 'I' arises craving for happiness, and craving will obscure the faults of things belonging to 'I', seeing their virtues, thereby strengthening the clinging to 'mine' through craving for things belonging to 'I', therefore striving to achieve the happiness of 'I'. Establishing the argument that it is the root: The second part is divided into three points: explaining that self-grasping is the root of faults; if self-grasping exists, there will be no detachment from craving; if there is no detachment from craving, one will wander in samsara. Explaining that self-grasping is the root of faults: First, self-grasping is the root of all faults. If someone clings to 'I', then he will regard others as different, from clinging to 'I' arises attachment, from clinging to 'others' arises hatred, and associated with these attachment and hatred, all faults such as jealousy and miserliness will arise. If self-grasping exists, there will be no detachment from craving: The second part is divided into two points: self-grasping generates both attachment and hatred; there is no other way to eliminate these two. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generating both (referring to the attachment to 'I' and the attachment to 'mine'). Firstly: The pudgala (Tibetan: གང་ཟག, Sanskrit: pudgala, Devanagari: पुद्गल, Romanized Sanskrit: pudgala, literal meaning: pudgala, referring to an indivisible, inexpressible subject) who considers 'mine' to be independent and possesses the grasping at 'mine' (believing 'mine' to be truly existent), because he necessarily clings to 'I'. The reason is established: A pudgala with grasping at 'mine' cannot not cling to 'I', because he considers 'I' to have faultless qualities. If one cannot eliminate both, there is no other method. The second point is divided into two parts: There is no other method to eliminate the attachment to 'I'; there is no other method to eliminate the attachment to 'mine'. There is no other method to eliminate the attachment to 'I'. The first part is divided into three points: Merely recognizing faults cannot remove the object of clinging; merely recognizing faults cannot prevent the cause of clinging from arising; pointing out that merely recognizing faults itself is contradictory. Merely recognizing faults cannot remove the object of clinging. Firstly: If one thinks that even if 'I' is faultless, the attachment to 'I' is faulty, then what will be the result of thinking so? Will it eliminate the attachment to 'I'? If one thinks so, then the pudgala who recognizes the attachment to 'I' as faulty actually cannot eliminate the attachment to 'I', because the object of his attachment to 'I'—the 'I' with qualities—has not been refuted, that is, he still considers 'I' to have qualities. This is universally established. Because the attachment to 'I' arises from thinking that 'I' has qualities. For objects related to recognizing qualities, attachment arises; for objects related to recognizing faults, hatred arises; similarly, eliminating afflictions such as jealousy and stinginess is because one does not see qualities and faults in the object, rather than eliminating them through external means like removing a thorn. Merely recognizing faults cannot prevent the cause of clinging from arising. Secondly: For the one with self-grasping who recognizes the attachment to 'I' as faulty, what can prevent the arising of attachment to 'I'? In reality, it cannot be prevented, because there exists the complete cause for the attachment to 'I' to arise—the belief that 'I' has qualities. Believing that 'I' has qualities is the cause of attachment to 'I', because the attachment to 'I' itself is because one believes that 'I' has qualities, that is, one clings to 'I' because one sees the qualities of 'I'. Pointing out that merely recognizing faults itself is contradictory. Thirdly: What faults are seen in the attachment to 'I'? If one says that because it is the root of suffering, it should be abandoned, then, for the attachment to 'I', even if it is the root of suffering, it should not be eliminated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
