Because the bondage of suffering is the very cause of the arising of suffering. Furthermore, given that 'I' is permanent, from what does liberation from suffering come? It does not, because it is not the cause of the cessation of suffering. This is universal, liberation from suffering is not generating suffering, it is the very cause of cessation. Why is it not the cause of both? Because whatever 'I' is, it is not the cause of suffering, etc., because it cannot be said to be impermanent. Secondly, the Sthavira school says, 'If 'I' is permanent, bondage and liberation are not reasonable, but for an 'I' that cannot be spoken of as either permanent or impermanent, bondage and liberation are reasonable.' For an 'I' that cannot be spoken of as either permanent or impermanent, bondage and liberation do not exist in any way, because it is not the cause of either the arising or cessation of suffering. 'I' is permanent, because it does not perish. This is universal, whatever's nature does not perish, the wise call it permanent. Sthavira school, abandon this shameless view that 'I' is neither permanent nor impermanent, and say that 'I' is permanent, because 'I' is not impermanent. Fourth, explaining the Truth of the Path by establishing the antidote to the view of self, which has two parts: Showing that realizing selflessness is the antidote; Explaining the reason for being the antidote. The first part has three points: Showing that transformation is attained by familiarizing oneself with selflessness; Refuting that even if transformation is attained, what is to be abandoned is destroyed; Refuting the reason for not attaining transformation. The first point is: The path of seeing selflessness, which was already explained in the chapter of the Teacher, is the antidote to samsara, because when you complete the practice from familiarization, the stream of the mind of the practitioner, as the basis of faults, is completely transformed and attains the path of transformation that abides in the nature of realizing selflessness. The second part has three points: Showing that there is no power to destroy what is to be abandoned; Explaining in detail the reason for not having the power; Refuting the argument against the way of holding the reason. The first point is: If the mind with faults transforms once into a state without faults...

Now, 1-7-131a If it is thought that the faults such as clinging to the mind as 'I' and 'mine' will arise again, and therefore there is no permanent liberation from samsara. For example, just as the path arises in a mind with faults. Then, for the mind that has been transformed through the practice of the path, faults should not arise again, because faults do not have the power to arise again. Explaining in detail the reason for having no power: It is divided into four points: the ways of clinging to what is to be abandoned and the antidote are contradictory, and the antidote has actually taken effect; the difference between inherent nature and what is adventitious causes the previous lack of power; even if there is power, one can effortlessly generate the antidote; the antidote with three characteristics cannot be reversed even with effort. The ways of clinging to what is to be abandoned and the antidote are contradictory, and the antidote has actually taken effect: The first point is: Why is there no power? For this mind that has been transformed through the practice of the path, you do not have the power to generate faults such as clinging to self again, because in general, according to the Sautrantika school, the non-erroneous consciousness clinging to an object, the dharma or the nature of things, is clinging to the way the object appears as it is, and the object as it is becomes the cause of the arising of this consciousness. Therefore, you have this nature of non-erroneous consciousness clinging to the object. And you, from this point of view, clinging to self is due to temporary causes deviating from clinging to the nature of things, and to remove it, one needs to rely on a valid cognition ( प्रमाण ) that can harm the causes themselves. For example, an unstable mind arises due to temporary causes and is easy to separate, just like the illusion of a snake on a rope. The difference between inherent nature and what is adventitious causes the previous lack of power: The second point is: Defilements, for the mind continuum that has been transformed into the nature of realizing selflessness through the practice of the path, there is no power to harm later, because even when selflessness was not seen before, the mind originally had no power to harm. The reason is established, because the nature of the mind is luminosity, and defilements are adventitious. This shows that previously, in the state of inherent purity, there was no power to harm inherently, so later, in the state of being free from adventitious defilements, there is no power to harm adventitiously. If it is explained as the time when one has just seen selflessness, it cannot reflect the meaning of the first two phrases. Even if there is power, one can effortlessly generate the antidote: The third point is: If there is power to generate faults, then after transformation... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
