'Oh, he abides at that time.' That's it. Refuting Arguments About the Cause The second has two parts: refuting arguments about the cause of karma; refuting arguments about the cause of love. Refuting Arguments About the Cause of Karma The first: If a non-attachment abides in samsara due to karma, then will his karma also connect the continuum in another existence? Answer: The karma of the continuum of a non-attachment who has completely transcended the craving for existence does not have the ability to propel another rebirth, because both of the co-occurring conditions, craving and thirst, have ceased. Refuting Arguments About the Cause of Love The second: A non-attachment, it follows that he has a view of sentient beings, because he has compassion. Answer: The arising of love in the continuum that directly knows the impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness of the truth of suffering is not a view of self that is connected with sentient beings, because there are no conflicting factors such as hatred, and it is a dharma of mind that follows the previous habituation of the activity of compassion. Also, a non-attachment, it follows that he will become attached, because he has compassion. Answer: The love of a non-attachment is not attachment, because he does not impute a distorted appearance to the object, but merely recognizes the continuum of suffering of others. Because attachment arises from imputing permanence, happiness, self, and self-ownership to a collection of dharmas that are not of that nature, but other than the nature of that object, such as permanence. Also, a non-attachment, if harm is done to the object of love, it follows that anger will arise, because he has love. Answer: A non-attachment does not arise from harming the object of love, because ignorance is the root of faults such as hatred, and that is grasping at sentient beings, and because that is absent. Therefore, the love of a non-attachment is asserted to be without the fault of hatred, because it does not arise from the cause of ignorance. Refuting Arguments About Abiding The third has two parts: refuting arguments about abiding by karma; refuting arguments about abiding by love. Refuting Arguments About Abiding by Karma The first: If a non-attachment has a body propelled by karma, then he will not be liberated from samsara. Answer: A non-attachment abiding by karma is not one who is not liberated from samsara, because the power of the previous karma that manifests the aggregates of this life is exhausted, the body reverts, and craving --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there is no attachment, it does not connect with other existences. Those who dwell in the undefiled cycle of existence, even if the power of their actions is not exhausted, are not bound by the cycle of existence, because they are free from the faults of the cycle of existence. Refuting the argument for dwelling with compassion: The second point is, if someone asks, why do those without attachment not dwell long for the benefit of sentient beings out of compassion? For example, Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have great efforts to dwell long for the benefit of sentient beings, because their compassion is weak. Great Vehicle Āryas, for the sake of other sentient beings, they will always dwell, because they possess the cause of continuous dwelling for the benefit of others—great compassion. Refuting the claim that there is no rebirth for those who first enter the path of the Āryas: The second point is to refute the claim that there is no rebirth for those who first enter the path of the Āryas. If it is thought that the view of self is the cause of existence, then those who see the path of the Āryas for the first time should not have rebirth, because they have already separated from the view of self. If this is thought, then Stream-enterers are not reborn because they do not have the view of self, but because they have only abandoned the conceptually arisen view of self, and have not abandoned the co-emergent view of self. If the co-emergent view of self is abandoned, then how can Stream-enterers still have rebirth? Because they have abandoned the co-emergent view of self, they should not have rebirth. Why has the co-emergent view of self not been abandoned? Stream-enterers have not abandoned it, because they still desire to be happy or not to suffer. This is a universal phenomenon, because at that time, any thought that considers 'I' is the co-emergent attachment to sentient beings. Furthermore, Stream-enterers should not strive for happiness because they desire it, because they have abandoned the co-emergent view of self. This is a universal phenomenon, because without the concept of 'I', there is no attachment to oneself. Without craving for oneself, one does not strive for happiness. Refuting the view that liberation and bondage are done by 'self': The fourth point is to refute the view that liberation and bondage are done by 'self', divided into two: refuting that it is done by the permanent 'self', and refuting that it is done by the inexpressible. Refuting that it is done by the permanent 'self': First, sentient beings have a 'self' that is the binder and the liberator, because the 'self' is bound by the suffering of samsara and is liberated from it. Just as Devadatta is bound by chains and then liberated from them. If this is thought, then for the permanent 'self', how can there be bondage? Because the permanent 'self' is not the cause of suffering. This is a universal phenomenon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
