A discussion on how craving alone is the cause. Third, if craving alone is the cause of arising, then isn't it contradictory to say in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakośa), 'Ignorance, karma, and craving are the causes of arising,' that arising has three causes? Answer: Ignorance, i.e., ignorance, is a phenomenon. Although it is also a cause of the arising of samsara, it is not mentioned here because it is not necessarily a promoter of samsara. Craving is a phenomenon. There is a reason why you are said to be the cause in this context, because it is what urges or prompts the continuum of the aggregates of samsara to be taken up, and because it is the immediate cause of arising. Karma is also a phenomenon. It is not appropriate to be said to be the cause in this context, because even if it exists, if it is devoid of the moisture of craving, it is not certain that there will be arising. Therefore, these texts generally establish suffering together with its cause, and by excluding causes of different kinds, establish causes of the same kind. Among these causes, ignorance, craving, and karma, the latter two do not necessarily produce suffering only in future lives, so here, establishing craving as the main factor in achieving the result is the point of the context. Establishing the cessation of suffering, thereby explaining the Truth of Cessation. Third, establishing the cessation of suffering, thereby explaining the Truth of Cessation, has four aspects: establishing liberation from suffering; refuting arguments against the liberator; refuting arguments against the manner of liberation; and refuting that bondage and liberation are done by a self. Establishing liberation from suffering. First, craving, the main cause of suffering, is a phenomenon. It is not eternal, because it has causes such as ignorance. This is pervasive, because there may be obstacles or lack of conditions for ignorance. Refuting arguments against the liberator. Second, some say: Considering that there is a real 'self', then sentient beings are phenomena. It is impossible to be liberated from samsara, because it is the nature of samsara, just as fire cannot be liberated from heat. Answer: That conclusion is a phenomenon. It does not harm Buddhists, because Buddhists agree with what the other party says, and the argument is not established, because there is no 'self'. So, how should samsara and liberation be established? Merely the continuum of the aggregates of suffering together with its causes is called samsara, and the mere non-arising due to the abandonment of causes is called liberation. If someone says: A person is a phenomenon. One should not strive to obtain liberation from samsara, because there is no 'self' for the one in samsara and the one who is liberated. Answer: If considered from the perspective of ultimate truth, we agree; but from the perspective of conventional truth, it is not so, because there is a difference between the one who can be liberated and the one who is liberated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If considered from the perspective of inherent existence, this reasoning is not established. For example, a person, it is reasonable to strive to abandon samsara and attain liberation, because as long as attachment to self is not overcome, and as long as the aggregates (Sanskrit: skandha, the five aggregates that constitute a sentient being's mind and body) with attachment to self are tormented by suffering, as long as self is imputed to suffering, there is no abiding in the nature of happiness, so nominally, self is in samsara. Even though the self of the liberated one does not exist ultimately, in order to destroy the false imputation of self and what belongs to self, in order for the aggregates to be nominally regarded as self striving, the key point is that, except for the one revered by many, all three Realist schools of Hinayana consider self, person (Sanskrit: pudgala, meaning 'person' or 'individual'), sentient being, and individual to be non-existent inherently, so ultimately, bondage and liberation are not established, while the aggregates are inherently existent, so ultimately, bondage and liberation are established. Nominally, self is the agent of bondage and liberation, because the suffering of the aggregates is imputed to the suffering of self, and the liberation of the aggregates from suffering is imputed to the liberation of self from suffering. The one revered by many and the non-Buddhists consider self to be inherently existent, so ultimately, bondage and liberation are established. Distinguishing between the aggregates and self as existent and non-existent inherently, and the aggregates acting and experiencing the results, while nominally regarding self as acting and experiencing the results, is a useful expedient in many situations. Refuting Disputes about the Manner of Liberation The third section has two parts: refuting the view that those who are free from attachment do not remain; refuting the view that there is no further rebirth for those who first enter the path of the noble ones. Refuting the View that Those Who Are Free from Attachment Do Not Remain The first part has three sections: explaining the two causes for those free from attachment to remain; refuting disputes about the causes; refuting disputes about remaining. Explaining the Two Causes for Those Free from Attachment to Remain The first point: If those who cling to self remain in samsara due to the power of craving, how do those who are free from attachment remain in samsara? A person who is free from attachment, you have a reason to remain in samsara temporarily, because you have two situations: a Mahayana noble one remains in samsara because of love and great compassion, or a Hinayana arhat remains in samsara because of the force of past karma, because they believe that the aggregates of this life have already been thrown by past karma and cannot be reversed temporarily. As it is said in the Collection of Intentional Sayings: 'One should not delight in death, nor should one delight in life, like an elephant tamed by a trainer,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
