You cannot exist, because form etc. are inseparable from the elements, and you can be separated from the elements. If the inseparability of form etc. from the elements also applies to desire etc., then, form etc., as the subject, your inseparability from the elements should not apply to desire etc. If it does apply, then desire etc. and the elements, as the subject, should arise simultaneously in all circumstances, because they are inseparable entities, which would lead to error. If desire etc. arise depending on external observational conditions, and sometimes do not arise even if they are elemental, then, desire etc., as the subject, the external object of apprehension is not always what determines your arising, because even without an external object, you can arise by taking your own conceptualization as an object. Therefore, there is no certainty that desire etc. will sometimes arise. The second point is that there is no certainty that desire etc. will sometimes arise: desire etc., as the subject, will not necessarily occur to some individuals, because they are without cause, because they lack a cause of the same kind. Or, if it is thought that the elements are the direct cause, then all minds of desire etc., as the subject, should arise at all times for all individuals, because for all individuals, their direct cause—the elements—is always present. This is an admission of the sign. Second, establishing characteristics such as impermanence, etc., is divided into four parts: establishing impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and emptiness. First, the basis of suffering truth, the aggregates of appropriation, as the subject, are impermanent, because they are sometimes observed, i.e., they arise. Second, the aggregates of appropriation, as the subject, are suffering, because they are the basis of faults, attachment to self and what belongs to self, and birth, aging, sickness, death, etc., and also because they are under the control of craving as a cause. Third, the aggregates of appropriation, as the subject, are not self, because they do not conform to the nature of self, because they are impermanent, multiple, and dependent on others. Fourth, the aggregates of appropriation, as the subject, are not even what is blessed by self as belonging to self, because I am not the one who blesses you, because I am not you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it is not a cause, because 'self' is permanent. This is pervasive. How can the permanent produce results? It cannot. As the subject of the property, you ('self') are permanent, therefore it is impossible to produce multiple results at different times, i.e., it is impossible to produce them sequentially. Because the permanent cannot produce results. Furthermore, permanent things like 'self', as the subject of the property, cannot be the cause of suffering, etc. Even if other causes of suffering, etc., are gathered, suffering, etc., will not cease because of the lack of you, because you do not exist. This is pervasive. Even if other causes of some results are gathered, if something is missing, the result will not be produced. Therefore, it can be inferred that other causes are missing, otherwise it would not be so. Therefore, by proving that suffering has a cause, the origin of suffering (klesha) is explained. Second, by proving that suffering has a cause, the truth of the origin of suffering (klesha) is explained. Here, those who follow the *Ornament for Clear Realization* divide the remaining three truths (truth of suffering, truth of cessation, truth of the path) into four aspects each, and Maitreya reveals the cause of the origin of suffering, the cessation of the truth of cessation, and the path of the truth of the path, thereby accomplishing the remaining three aspects. If explained according to the latter, there are three: proving that suffering has a cause; refuting the misidentification of the cause as something else; revealing that the main cause is craving. Proving that suffering has a cause. First, it is divided into two: proving that it has a cause by occasionally arising; refuting the argument that it is causeless. Proving that it has a cause by occasionally arising. First, this suffering, as the subject of the property, is proven to have a cause, because it occasionally arises. This is pervasive. If it were causeless, it would either be permanent or completely non-existent, not occasionally arising. Because if it were causeless, it would not need to depend on other conditions. Refuting the argument that it is causeless. Secondly, some who claim that nature is the cause say: 'Just as the sharpness of thorns, etc., is causeless, these sufferings will arise without cause.' This is unreasonable. The sharpness of thorns, etc., and the truth of suffering, as the subject of the property, also have a cause, because there are other, previous things that follow or disappear. This is pervasive. Because there are other, previous things, depending on it, other, subsequent things will arise or change. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
