Therefore, understanding this is also established. How salvation arises from that Fourth, how salvation arises from that is: The Bhagavan (Lord, possessor of six excellences) is correct. As stated in the offering praise of the Sutra, because he saves sentient beings from suffering by perfectly and truly proclaiming the path that he himself has seen and experienced. How does he proclaim it perfectly and truly? The Bhagavan is correct, he does not lie, that is, he does not proclaim the path untruthfully, because there is no result or need in proclaiming it that way. If someone thinks that he proclaims it untruthfully because he has no compassion, then, the Bhagavan is correct, he does not proclaim it untruthfully because he has no compassion, because he possesses great compassion. All the actions of his body, speech, and mind are for the benefit of others, and he has practiced and become accustomed to them countless eons. Therefore, it is established that there is proof. Fifth, therefore, it is established that there is proof: The Bhagavan is correct, you have proof of being a valid person (pramana purusha), because your proof—compassion—has been proven by reason, and from that it has been proven that the Teacher (Shasta), the Sugata (Gone to Bliss), and the Savior (Trata) arise independently. Establishing what has been done by negating what has not been done Third, establishing what has been done by negating what has not been done has five points: Establishing the Savior by the reason of real power; how the Sugata is established from that; how the Teacher is established from that; how compassion is established from that; therefore, it is proven that effort has been made. Establishing the Savior by the reason of real power The first point has two parts: The teacher who teaches the Four Noble Truths is shown to be the Savior; establishing the Four Noble Truths to be taught by reason. The teacher who teaches the Four Noble Truths is shown to be the Savior The first point is: Regarding the meaning of the Savior, in the explanation of teaching the truth of the path, or by explaining the four proofs in the usual way, only the existence of proof is established, or by explaining in the opposite way, the effort on the proof is also established. That is, the Bhagavan is correct, he is the Savior, because he perfectly and truly teaches those who seek liberation about the knowable—the truth of suffering (duḥkhasatya), what is to be abandoned—the truth of the origin (samudayasatya), what is to be attained—the truth of cessation (nirodhasatya), and what to rely on—the truth of the path (mārgasatya), that is, the Four Noble Truths. The proof of perfectly and truly teaching is that, just as this teacher teaches the Four Noble Truths, it is established by the reason of real power, which is related to the following texts. Establishing the Four Noble Truths to be taught by reason The second point has four parts: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, by establishing the base and characteristics, explain the Truth of Suffering (Dukha Satya). By establishing suffering and its cause, explain the Truth of Origin (Samudaya Satya). By establishing the cessation of suffering, explain the Truth of Cessation (Nirodha Satya). By establishing the antidote to self-grasping, explain the Truth of the Path (Marga Satya). Establishing the base and characteristics, explain the Truth of Suffering: First, it is divided into two parts: establishing the base as cyclic existence; establishing the characteristics as impermanence, etc. Establishing the base as cyclic existence: First, it is divided into three parts: revealing that suffering is cyclic existence; establishing the existence of cyclic existence through reasoning; if cyclic existence does not exist, it would lead to extremes. Revealing that suffering is cyclic existence: First, afflictions, karma, and vipaka (karmic results), these three are the uninterrupted aggregates of appropriation (Upadana Skandha) of cyclic existence. This dharma is the Truth of Suffering, because they are directly or indirectly conditioned phenomena that are suffering. Establishing the existence of cyclic existence through reasoning: Divided into two parts: establishing through the sign of clarity from habituation; establishing through the sign of the same kind of proximate cause. Establishing through the sign of clarity from habituation: Divided into two parts: stating the proposition; refuting the argument. Stating the proposition: First, the nihilist says: 'Cyclic existence is not reasonable, because there are no past and future lives.' To this, the newborn being has the habituation of attachment, etc., because attachment, etc., arise clearly in their own continuum. This is pervasive, because in this life, from the previous habituation of attachment, etc., later attachment, etc., are clearly seen. Refuting the argument: Divided into three parts: refuting the causeless arising of attachment, etc.; refuting arising from a different kind; therefore, the same kind is established as the cause. Refuting the causeless arising of attachment, etc.: First, if attachment, etc., do not arise from habituation, then is it without a cause or is there another cause? If it is the former, then attachment, etc., are not arbitrary and without cause, because they are sometimes seen to arise. This is pervasive, because if it is without a cause, then sometimes arising is contradictory. Refuting arising from a different kind: Divided into two parts: refuting arising from the cause of disease; refuting arising from the cause of elements. Refuting arising from the cause of disease: Divided into four parts: without exclusion, therefore not a result; without concomitance, therefore not a result; if it is a result, it would lead to extremes; refuting the argument that is the same as itself. Without exclusion, therefore not a result: First, even if attachment, etc., are not without a cause, they do not arise from habituation, but from wind, bile, and phlegm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
