Question: If, from the perspective of a sentient being (lusz can, referring to beings), the nature of a dharma (chos, referring to things), is like 'because the former is always the proximate cause,' then it would follow that many similar sense faculties (dbang po, referring to sense organs) would arise simultaneously, because the direct cause of many similar sense faculties—the body—is constant and always exists. Also, if the five sense faculties of this life arise from the mind (sems, referring to consciousness), then the five sense faculties of other bodies in future lives should also arise from this consciousness, because the reason for the sense faculties of this life arising from consciousness is the same. Fourth, explaining the conclusion established through negation: Whether it is the last mind of an ordinary person or an Arhat at the time of death, all minds have the nature that, since the body and breath are the proximate causes of the mind, if one posits 'the cause of the mind is separated from the body or breath' as the reason, then you (the opponent) cannot prove that there is no connection to the subsequent consciousness, because the body and breath are not the proximate causes of the mind. Since that reason cannot prove the absence of connection, therefore, another proof similar to it—the dying mind—also has the nature that it is not a valid reason to prove that the subsequent consciousness is not connected to the previous dharma, because it is considered to have the flaw of being inclusive of the dissimilar side, i.e., it may occur in a place contrary to what is being proven. Second, refuting the view that even if it exists, it will not transcend its own nature, which includes three aspects: establishing the debate based on examples; refuting the meaning of the examples presented by others; explaining the appropriate example that one agrees with. First: Even if compassion (snying rje, referring to compassion) changes slightly through habituation (gom pa, referring to habit), it will not transcend its previous nature and become characterized by self-operating, just as jumping and the temperature of water, even if they change through habituation, do not increase infinitely. The second part includes four aspects: the example does not have the characteristic of infinite growth; the meaning has the characteristic of infinite growth; refuting the debate that the example is the same as the meaning; refuting the debate that the meaning is too extreme. First: Jumping and the temperature of water have the nature that they do not increase infinitely like the nature of compassion, even if they increase slightly through habituation, they are not of the nature of self-increasing. This reason is established, because the efforts that can benefit jumping are not infinite for subsequent changes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there is no ability to increase the water's temperature, and because the water upon which the water's temperature depends is not constant. There is pervasion, if once accustomed, it still relies on subsequent effort, or becomes unstable, then the subsequent differences of the accustomed object will not infinitely increase, because there is pervasion. Second, regarding the meaning of having infinitely increasing differences: Loving-kindness, etc., if accustomed without being separated from the cause of habit, then subsequent differences will naturally arise, because this is a virtue born from habit in the mind, not relying on physical effort. For example, when fire, etc., burns wood, if there are no obstacles, it will naturally enter the wood without relying on effort. Also, when taming mercury and gold, etc., after one effort, it does not rely on other subsequent efforts, but is naturally tamed. There is pervasion, if once accustomed, it no longer needs to rely on effort, then the previous effort will make other efforts special. This shows that it is different from the habit of jumping. Because there is an example of naturally entering, therefore, thoughts of loving-kindness, etc., if accustomed without being separated from the cause of habit, then where will it exist without reaching a limit? Because this is a virtue of mind that increases from the seed of the same kind as before. There is pervasion, because the virtue born from these habits is the virtue of the nature of mind, so the previous effort makes the subsequent difference special, and vice versa. This shows that it is different from the temperature of water. Third, regarding refuting the argument that the example is the same as the meaning: If loving-kindness, etc., infinitely increase, then jumping should also infinitely increase. The phenomenon of jumping has a definite limit, because your cause—the power of the body and the ability of effort—is definite. There is pervasion, loving-kindness, etc., increases from the same kind as before, but jumping does not increase from the previous jump, but each time it needs to rely on the effort of the body. Then, will it be possible to jump from the time when one has not practiced as well as when one has practiced later? Because there is no difference in strength and effort before and after. The person who jumps, initially --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
