Because different kinds do not arise simultaneously, generating each subsequent similar kind requires a definite capacity. The argument is established: if the discriminating consciousness clings to other things, such as pleasant sounds, it loses the ability to temporarily grasp things like form, and therefore, even if other things like form are near, they are not grasped. If it is said that in the womb and so on, the body and consciousness arise simultaneously at first, and later consciousness necessarily arises from the previous similar kind, so it is the same. Body (subject), why does your ability to generate consciousness diminish later? It should not diminish. Because later you are no different from the body that previously generated consciousness. Now, refuting erroneous arguments. Third, refuting erroneous arguments, divided into two parts: the argument and the answer. The argument. First: If the body ceases to exist at the time of death (subject), then the mind should exist independently. Because the mind exists and does not depend on the body. The answer. Second, divided into three parts: explaining the two causes of the next life, negating the argument without connection, and proposing the argument with reasonable connection. Explaining the two causes of the next life. First: Possessor of a body (subject), there is no fault in the mind existing independently after death. If the cause of the body in the next life is not because the effect of generating the body in the next life is obtained from the dying body, and the stream of consciousness of the body in the next life, the dying consciousness does not become an auxiliary factor, then even if the consciousness exists independently after death, the dying consciousness will become an auxiliary factor for the body in the next life. Then, what is the immediate cause of the body in the next life? Other body, body in the next life (subject), you have an immediate cause, because the five aggregates at the time of death in this life are the immediate cause of your generation. Here, most people believe that if consistency is maintained, it will not become an auxiliary factor, just like arising in the formless realm from desire. If it changes, then the argument is not established, just like arising in the realm of desire from desire, such a distinction in explanation is unreasonable. Because in the state of two absorptions, the stream of consciousness ceases, and there is absolutely no form in the formless realm, this is the view of the Sarvastivadins, not the view of the Sutrantikas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not so. The immediately preceding condition refers to the continuity of similar types without interruption by other things, not to the interruption by other dharmas. The latter, however, is considered as the substantial cause. Moreover, both Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna argue extensively about whether form exists in the Formless Realm, as stated in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa. Explaining the meaning of the text as 'the five faculties of this life' without engaging in the literal meaning is because it is not related to the text. If it is said that even similar things are not necessarily immediate conditions, then this explanation is also not a distinction of the meaning of the text. The five faculties of this life, as the cause of form for beings in the Formless Realm, refer to the subtle form that becomes the basis of consciousness through the impressions they leave behind, not to the actual existence of the five faculties. Because if the five faculties actually existed, it would lead to the fault of beings in the Formless Realm having an intermediate state (bardo). The intention of the author of the Ornament and his followers in explaining impressions as the cause is also this. Only I speak truthfully in this way; no one else has done so in this snowy land. Refuting the proof without connection: Secondly, the body and mind at the time of death are not the cause and condition of the body and mind of the next life, because it is not observed. If so, then the component of the next body, namely the consciousness as the condition, and the dying body itself as the immediate cause, to refute this, the reason given 'because it is not observed' is not a valid reason to establish the thesis, because it has been fully explained before that it is not a valid reason to establish the thesis. If it is said that even if it is not observed, it cannot be refuted, but it can be refuted by reasons such as being a sense faculty and being a mind, then the sense faculty etc. are also not established to refute this, because when refuting this, there is still residual doubt of uncertainty. Refuting the proof that can be established: Thirdly, the sense faculty at the time of death, if other conditions are complete and there are no obstacles, then other sense faculties of the next life can also arise, because it is a sense faculty. For example, the previous sense faculty of this life has the ability to generate the next sense faculty of the same type as itself, because it can be seen that the previous sense faculty changes from clear to turbid, and the next sense faculty also changes from clear to turbid accordingly. If it is said that the sense faculty of this life is not produced from the previous sense faculty, but from a constant and unchanging body... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
