Q: Is beauty the substantial cause of attachment? A: No, it is not. Because not all individuals who renounce beauty necessarily generate attachment. Q: Is attachment necessarily caused by beauty? A: No, it is not. Because attachment can arise even from ugly things, and it can also arise in those who do not consider beauty as a virtue. Because beauty is not the only cause of attachment. Q: What if considering beauty as a virtue is a contributing factor to generating attachment? A: Then all men who see beauty would consider beauty as a virtue, because there is no difference between beauty and semen for those who consider beauty as a virtue. Do you accept this consequence? (A: I accept.) Then that would lead to a very absurd conclusion. Third, if phlegm is the sole cause of attachment, then in a state of having phlegm, one would not become hateful, because you assert that one only has attachment in that state. This is not reasonable, because attachment and hatred are of different natures and are contradictory. You cannot assert this, because it is not seen or the case that hatred never arises in a state of phlegm. Fourth, refuting the argument that is similar to one's own: If someone says that the faults mentioned regarding the arising of attachment etc. from wind etc. are also similar to you, then the Buddhist replies that there is no such consequence. Because in your system, attachment etc. depend on similar causes, i.e., the view of the aggregates, and the particular predispositions cultivated by previous attachment etc. Second, refuting that arising from the cause of the elements is divided into two: refuting the new arising of what did not exist before, and refuting the maintaining of what has already been established. First, refuting the new arising of what did not exist before: If someone says that attachment etc. are the result of the elements, i.e., attachment arises from a greater proportion of earth and water, hatred arises from a greater proportion of fire and wind, and ignorance arises from a greater proportion of water and wind, then the reasoning that refutes attachment etc. being the result of wind etc. also refutes attachment etc. being the nature or result of the elements themselves. Because wind, bile, and phlegm are respectively the nature of wind, fire, and water, as stated by Shakya. Second, regarding refuting the maintaining of what has already been established, there are three aspects:

Refutation of previous claims, refuting contradictory commitments, and refuting with extreme consequences. First, refutation by previous reasoning: Qualities such as attachment, you do not depend on the already established elements, because your dependence on the already established elements does not rely on existence or non-existence, etc. Second, refuting contradictory commitments: If generally denying the dependent and the dependence, does it contradict the commitment that 'form arising from the elements exists by relying on the elements'? Answer: Qualities such as white, which are forms arising from the elements, do not depend on earth, etc., in the manner of causing the already established to exist, because it is impossible for a support to exist that causes the already established to exist. Then, what is the meaning of 'that which arises from the elements depends on the elements'? Qualities such as form, the meaning of your dependence on those elements is not to cause the already established to exist, because the previous elements are either the cause of you, or inseparable from your co-existent arising elements, therefore you depend on the elements. Other than cause and effect and inseparability, it is not reasonable for you to depend on the elements. If, like how the potency of intoxication from alcohol diminishes even when the alcohol has not spoiled, the elements and that which arises from the elements also depend on each other in a separable manner? Answer: The potency of intoxication from alcohol does not truly depend on the alcohol, because it is not different from the substance of the alcohol, because when you perish, the substance of the alcohol, which is the support, will also perish, and when the alcohol, which is the support, remains, you, the dependent, do not perish. If the nature of the arising mind (འབྱུང་སེམས་) is the same as that of alcohol and the potency of intoxication from alcohol, then the arising mind is not undifferentiated, because it is a different substance, because the unerring consciousness with different appearances realizes that it is a different substance. Third, refuting with extreme consequences: If the elements or the body are the support for the mind to exist, then the mind, intellect, and conceptual thought, whatever different changes the body undergoes, your nature, that is, your aspect, should arise in exactly the same way, because the body is the support for your existence. Just as before the body changes, the forms, etc., that depend on it arise in the same way. If it is said that this is not the case, even if the support is the same, it will change into a different aspect due to the object of apprehension. Then, the aspect --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
