Refuting that (effects) arise from the cause of disease. Refuting that (effects) arise from the cause of elements. Refuting that (effects) arise from the cause of disease. The first part has four points: No reversal, so not a result; no following, so not a result; if it is a result, it is too much; refuting arguments similar to oneself. No reversal, so not a result: The first point is: Attachment, etc., are not without cause, but arise from habit. If it is said that the three, wind, bile, and phlegm, sequentially and clearly produce the three, ignorance, hatred, and desire, then ignorance, etc. (dharmas) have (self-nature), and are not the fruit of wind, etc., bile, and phlegm, because there is a reversal confusion for these three sequentially. Because it is seen that those with more phlegm and no bile have great hatred, etc. If it is said that at that time, phlegm is mixed with the nature of bile, and there is no fault of hatred being confused with bile, then, the one with phlegm, the dharma of bile, besides that hatred, wouldn't one also see the yellowing of the skin and the foul smell, etc.? One should see it, because the cause of bile has unimpeded power. If it is said that each of wind, bile, and phlegm can produce all three poisons, then ignorance, etc. (dharmas) have (self-nature), and are not the fruit of all wind, etc. If they were, then all bodies with the same phlegm should have the same desire, because they have the same phlegm, which would become a fault. If it is said that although the four elements are the same, the forms, etc. of sentient beings are different, so although the cause of phlegm is the same, the fruit of desire is different, and there is no fault, then, if the forms, etc. of sentient beings are not caused by the good and bad deeds with special differences as the main cause, but are produced by the four elements themselves, then when the four elements produce forms, etc., the bodies, etc. have (self-nature), and should have the same forms, etc., because the cause is the same four elements, so this argument is also the same. No following, so not a result: The second part has three points: Establishing the reason; establishing the three aspects; refuting the rejection of faults. Establishing the reason: The first point is: Ignorance, etc. (dharmas) have (self-nature), and are not the immediate cause of each of wind, etc., because if wind, etc. have differences of increase and decrease, Then you also have no differences of increase and decrease. Establishing the three aspects: The second point is: If it is said that the reason is not established, because it is seen that when bile increases, the body heats up, and hatred also increases, then, just that is not enough to establish the reason. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not merely a transformation; if it were, then all wind, bile, and phlegm would necessarily be the proximate cause of hatred. Because your (wind, bile, phlegm) transformation increases hatred due to bodily suffering. If admitted, then all wind, etc., would generate hatred, because everything is the same as hatred. The fundamental reason has pervasiveness, because when phlegm, etc., the proximate cause of desire, etc., increases, it is impossible for desire, etc., the result of the proximate cause, to decrease. For example, when bile increases, it is impossible for its result, such as fever, to decrease. If it is said that desire arises from the balance of the three diseases, and hatred arises from imbalance, then the fundamental argument is not established. Then, the changes of desire, etc., caused by the balance and imbalance of the three diseases, do not arise directly from the three diseases, but from the pleasure and pain caused by the balance and imbalance of the three diseases. Refutation of Faults The third part is divided into two parts: questioning the reason for the refutation, and separately refuting the two reasons stated. Questioning the Reason for the Refutation The first part: If it is said that, in general, phlegm is the cause of desire, but when suffering caused by the imbalance of the three diseases obstructs it, even if there is phlegm, desire will not arise, then, when the three diseases are balanced, what do you think is the cause of desire? Please state the cause of desire. Separately Refuting the Two Reasons Stated The second part is divided into two parts: semen should not be the cause of desire, and beauty, etc., should not be the cause of desire. Semen Should Not Be the Cause of Desire The first part: As an answer to that question, if it is said that semen arises from the balance of the three diseases, and desire arises from this, then, desire, you are not the direct result of the balance of the three diseases and the semen arising from it, because you can be seen to exist even when the three diseases are imbalanced, and, a person without desire, even if the three diseases are balanced, cannot be seen to generate you, moreover, a person with desire, even if semen is exhausted and bleeding, can be seen to generate you. Furthermore, a person with desire, it is impossible to generate strong desire for one beautiful woman, because for that woman, semen will not necessarily increase. Beauty, etc., Should Not Be the Cause of Desire The second part: If it is said that the beauty and behavior, etc., of a woman are also auxiliary factors for semen to generate desire, and are conditions that work together, therefore, it is not contradictory to generate strong desire for one woman, then, the beauty of a woman --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
