Since sounds are not inapplicable to any meaning, the pervasion is admitted. The existence of the expression is because the expressed meaning is accomplished. The reason is established because the use of sounds depends entirely on the will of the speaker. Thus, other types of reasoning are also refuted. The third point: By showing that meaning cannot be inferred from sound alone, other views are refuted. For example, the Samkhyas (Enumerators) and the Jainas (Naked Ones) assert that 'buddhi' (intellect) is unconscious because it is impermanent and has the characteristic of arising and ceasing. They also assert that trees are conscious because peeling their bark causes death.' This assertion is flawed because merely establishing the sound as a reason does not guarantee universal validity. The meaning of arising and ceasing as a reason is not established in itself. Moreover, Buddhists do not accept that trees die from the cessation of life. If 'death' is posited as a reason, it is uncertain with things like lamps. Through the above discussion, the implications of the established argument are explained. The fourth point is divided into two parts: the essence of the reason is mainly established, and the meaning derived from the name is mainly established. First, if the essence of the object to be posited as a reason is not established in the subject of the argument, this is the 'unestablished subject-property'. However, if the object to be posited as a reason (such as 'made') is established in the subject of the argument, even if its characteristics (such as the 'made' of sound and pot) are not established in the subject of the argument, it does not hinder the establishment of the argument. For example, in proving that 'sound is impermanent', if the opponent argues that the characteristic of 'made' depends on the attribute of space, even if this 'made' is not established, it does not hinder the establishment of the subject-property. Second, even if the sound (name) of the reason is not manifestly established in the subject of the argument for both the proponent and the opponent, if the object (meaning) of the reason is manifestly established in the subject of the argument for both the proponent and the opponent, then the subject-property will be established. For example, to the Ulukas (owl-like ones) of the Vaisheshika school who believe that atoms are permanent, the Buddhist would say: 'Atoms are impermanent because they are embodied,' or 'because they are obstructive.' Even if the Vaisheshikas do not admit that the name 'embodied' applies to the atoms of the four great elements, since the meaning of being tangible is established, this is a valid argument.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, the Vaiśeṣika, believe that there are two substances: Self (Ātman) and Mind (Manas). Direction (Dik), Time (Kāla), and Space (Ākāśa) are substances that pervade all places, while the four elements (Mahābhūta) such as Earth (Pṛthvī) are not substances that pervade all places. The measure of substances that do not pervade all places is part of गुण (Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: गुण, Sanskrit Romanization: guṇa, Chinese literal meaning: गुण), and it is acknowledged as having a body. Since परमाणु (Tibetan: རྡུལ་ཕྲན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: परमाणु, Sanskrit Romanization: paramāṇu, Chinese literal meaning: परमाणु) is not acknowledged, the name is not established, but since its meaning is tangible, in order to refute, it is established in the common appearance of both the affirmative and negative sides, so the meaning of having a body becomes a correct argument. Therefore, if the meaning of the reason itself is wrong, unestablished, or contradictory, then even if the sound of the reason is not wrong, it should be known that the argument is flawed, because the thing that is the reason, that is, the meaning, must establish the thing to be proven, that is, the meaning. Even if the sound of the reason is not wrong, an example of the meaning being wrong is: a cow is horned because it moves. An elephant calf is an elephant because it has arms. When moving and having arms are used as arguments, the meaning expressed by the sound of these two is only considered unique to cows and elephants in the world, so it is understood as horns and elephants. If the meaning that the word wants to express is the thing that moves and has arms, then you, as the certainty of having horns and elephants, are uncertain, because a person is also you. Refuting the actions of the Svabhāvavādins (those who believe in self-origination): The fourth part has four aspects: the contradiction of a single thing having cause and non-cause; there is no reversal, therefore it is unreasonable as a cause; there is no co-occurrence, therefore it is unreasonable as a cause; and avoiding the uncertainty of the previous argument. The contradiction of a single thing having cause and non-cause: The first point is: if Īśvara (the自在天) is constant and creates all beings through one entity, then that thing of Īśvara, when it is the cause of the result at some time, how can it not be the cause at some time? Because the situation of transformation is impossible, because it is always the cause of the result. This argument is explicitly acknowledged. Furthermore, Īśvara, in what special case do you consider it to be the cause and not the non-cause? Because even in the case of being considered the cause, it is not essentially different from the case of being the non-cause. If there is no universality, then why wouldn't you consider the stump that is unrelated to you to be your cause as well, when the wound on the black body heals? Because there is reason to believe that it would become the cause, because it is not essentially different from the non-cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
