If I have no obstructions, then other subsequent sense faculties will also certainly be accomplished, because they are sense faculties. For example, we see that the previous sense faculty of this life has the ability to generate a subsequent one similar to itself. Just as we see that when the previous sense faculty becomes clear or turbid, the subsequent one also becomes clear or turbid. If the sense faculties of this life do not arise from the previous sense faculties, but arise from a single permanent body, then for a single sentient being, many similar sense faculties would arise simultaneously, since the permanent cause of the previous sense faculties is always present, because the direct cause of many similar sense faculties—the permanent body—is always present. Furthermore, if the five sense faculties of this life arise from the mind, then the five sense faculties of other bodies and future lives should also arise from this very mind, since the sense faculties of this life arise from the mind for the same reason. Fourth, demonstrating the conclusion established by negation: The minds of ordinary beings and Arhats (梵文,Arhat, arhat,Worthy One) at the moment of death are all, by reason of the body and breath being the proximate cause of the mind, separate from the body or breath as the cause of the mind. By positing this as a reason, you cannot establish that there is no connection to a subsequent consciousness, since the body and breath are not the proximate cause of the mind. Because that reason does not establish the absence of connection, therefore another proof similar to it, namely the dying mind, is also not a valid reason for proving that the previous sentient being is not connected to a subsequent consciousness, because it is considered to be inclusive of what is not in agreement with such a proof, since it could apply to the side that is not in agreement with this proof. Second, refuting the view that even if it exists, it does not transcend its own nature, which has three points: presenting the debate based on examples; refuting the meaning of the examples presented by others; explaining the example that one's own side agrees with. The first is: Even if some difference arises from habituating compassion (梵文,maitrī,maitri,loving-kindness), it does not transcend the previous nature, and does not become characterized by entering on its own accord, just as even if a difference arises from habituating jumping and the temperature of water, it does not increase without limit. The second point has four parts: there is no difference of unlimited increase in the example; there is a difference of unlimited increase in the meaning; refuting the debate that the example is the same as the meaning; the debate that there is an extreme consequence in the meaning.

Abandoning the argument. The analogy lacks the characteristic of endless increase. Firstly: Jumping and the temperature of water, their nature is such that they do not increase endlessly like the nature of compassion. Although habit can slightly increase their distinctiveness, they do not inherently possess the nature of self-increase. The reason is established because the efforts that aid jumping cannot prove the endless increase of subsequent characteristics. Moreover, the water upon which the temperature of water depends is not permanent. The pervasion holds because if, after becoming accustomed once, one still relies on subsequent efforts or becomes unstable, then the subsequent characteristics of the object of habit will not increase endlessly. The meaning possesses the characteristic of endless increase. Secondly: Affection, etc., their nature is such that if practiced without separation from the causes of habit, subsequent characteristics will arise spontaneously. This is because it is a quality born from habit in the mind, not dependent on physical effort. For example, when fire burns wood, if there are no obstacles, the wood will ignite spontaneously without effort. Similarly, when taming mercury and gold, etc., once effort is made, they will be tamed spontaneously without reliance on further effort. The pervasion holds because if, after becoming accustomed once, one no longer relies on effort, then the previous effort will make the other effort distinct. This shows that jumping is not the same as habit. Because there is an example of spontaneous arising, therefore, thoughts of affection, etc., their nature is such that if practiced without separation from the causes of habit, where would they exist with a limit? They would not exist. Because it is a quality of mind that increases from the seed of its previous homogeneous kind. The pervasion holds because the quality born from those habits is a quality born as the very nature of the mind, so the previous effort makes the subsequent characteristic distinct, and vice versa. This shows that it is not the same as the temperature of water. Abandoning the argument that the analogy is the same as the meaning. Thirdly: If affection, etc., increase endlessly, then jumping would also increase endlessly in the same way. Jumping, its nature is that it possesses a self of definite limit. Because your reason, the power of the body and the capacity of effort are of definite limit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
