If the body is constantly changing, your essence, that is, your appearance, should also be produced consistently. Because the body is the basis on which you exist, and you are conscious. Just as before the body changes, the forms and colors that depend on it should also be produced consistently. If this is not the case, even if the basis is the same, the appearance will change due to the difference in the object taken. Then, from where does the dependence of the vikalpa (conceptual thought) on the object taken come from? Because this is merely an arbitrary setting. Therefore, the similar becomes the cause. Third, 'the similar becomes the cause' means that some previous desires, etc., produce some later desires, etc. Because, at any time, the previous consciousness, without relying on the body, becomes the cause for the awakening of the habit of the later consciousness. According to the second view, a sentient being (sattva) will produce many streams of consciousness at the same time. Because each part of the body has the ability to produce its own consciousness. Refuting the defense against this fault. The second part is divided into two aspects: one breath is not reasonable as the cause of consciousness; multiple breaths are not reasonable as the cause of consciousness. One breath is not reasonable as the cause of consciousness. First, even if there are multiple bodies, multiple consciousnesses will not be produced simultaneously, because there is only one breath, so it is inevitable that one consciousness will be produced from that one breath. If this is the view, then breath (prāṇa) is the subject, and you cannot determine that consciousness is one because you are one, because you, like the body, are composed of many particles. If the other party does not admit this, and believes that breath and body are constant and one, so consciousness is produced sequentially, then a sentient being will clearly produce many streams of consciousness at the same time. Because the cause of many streams of consciousness, that is, the constant and one breath and body with unimpeded ability, are always close. If the other party believes that the constant and one breath and body are not the cause of producing multiple consciousnesses simultaneously, but produce them sequentially, then the constant and one breath and body cannot produce multiple consciousnesses sequentially, because they are no different from the state before not producing multiple consciousnesses. Furthermore, even if it is admitted that there is only one breath, a sentient being cannot determine that consciousness is one just because breath is unique, because breath flows outward, which is just one situation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, in order to generate a mind that grasps multiple prior and subsequent objects, if there is no pervasion, because a single mind can know multiple prior and subsequent objects simultaneously. Then, that mind, as the subject, will grasp multiple prior and subsequent objects simultaneously at the very time it grasps the prior object, because there is no contradiction in grasping multiple prior and subsequent objects simultaneously at the very time it grasps the prior object. If this is not established, then that mind, as the subject, will not gradually grasp multiple prior and subsequent objects either, because it is no different from not grasping multiple objects even later. Secondly, regarding the impossibility of multiple things being the cause of mental consciousness: there are two parts: refuting the production of mental consciousness by multiple things arising sequentially, and refuting the production of mental consciousness by multiple things arising simultaneously. Firstly, refuting the production of mental consciousness by multiple things arising sequentially: For example, many moments of breath that are of the same kind as one's own, arising from a permanent body, with an earlier and later sequence. If it is asserted that such breaths are the cause of sequential conceptual thoughts, then, those breaths, as the subject, how could they arise sequentially? Because there is no cause for arising with a prior sequence. If this is not established, because the prior breath of the same kind is the cause. Then, a sentient being, as the subject, the first breath of this life will not arise, because prior to the breath of this life, there is no such prior cause of the same kind of breath. If it is not established, then there will be a prior birth. Even if there is a prior breath of the same kind, then that breath, as the subject, must necessarily be multiple, because it arises from multiple different places of origin. If this is accepted, then for one person, as the subject, multiple substantial mental consciousnesses will arise simultaneously, because multiple breaths exist simultaneously. Secondly, refuting the production of mental consciousness by multiple things arising simultaneously: If it is asserted that even though there are multiple breaths, those breaths do not each produce a single mental consciousness, but rather multiple breaths at the same time, that is, at the same time, are the cause of a single conceptual thought, therefore multiple mental consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously. Then, that conceptual thought, as the subject, in situations such as weak breathing, even if one part of the breath is missing, you will not arise, because the complete presence of all parts of the breath is your direct cause. If the way the parts of the breath exist is the cause of the mind, then, that consciousness, as the subject, will have differences of increase and decrease due to the increase and decrease of breath, because the increase and decrease of breath... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
