Because how your immediate cause is, that's how it appears. Generally speaking, if a certain result doesn't produce different increases or decreases from the different increases or decreases of a certain cause, then it's not the result of that cause. **Refuting Similarity to Oneself** Third, refuting similarity to oneself: If someone says that you also have a single *pudgala* (Tibetan: སྐྱེས་བུ་, meaning: individual) simultaneously generating multiple thoughts, which is the same as me. Then, consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས་, meaning: consciousness) and thoughts (Tibetan: རྟོག་པ་, meaning: thoughts), as phenomena (Tibetan: ཆོས་, meaning: phenomena), the former thought is the cause of the latter thought, but similar multiple thoughts will not arise simultaneously, because generating each similar subsequent thought requires a definite capacity. The reason is established, if consciousness and thought are attached to other things, such as music, then it will lose the ability to temporarily grasp things like form, so even if other things, such as form, come close, it will not grasp them. If initially in the womb, etc., the body simultaneously generates multiple thoughts, and later the thoughts will definitely generate similar subsequent thoughts from their own similar previous thoughts, so it is the same. The body (Tibetan: ལུས་, meaning: body) as a phenomenon, why does your ability to generate thoughts change later? It shouldn't change. Because later it is no different from the body that generated thoughts before. **Refuting Arguments About Error** Third, refuting arguments about error, divided into two parts: the argument and the answer. **Argument** First, if someone says that at the time of death, the body will change, then the mind (Tibetan: སེམས་, meaning: mind) must exist independently, because the mind exists, and it does not depend on the body. **Answer** Second, divided into three parts: explaining the two causes of the next life, refuting the argument without connection, and proposing a reasonable argument with connection. **Explaining the Two Causes of the Next Life** First, a being with a body (Tibetan: ལུས་ཅན་, meaning: a being with a body) as a phenomenon, there is no fault in the mind existing independently after death, even if the cause of the next life's body is not the effect of the dying body producing the next life's body, and the stream of consciousness of the next life's body is not the dying mind as an auxiliary factor, even if the mind exists independently after death, the dying mind will become an auxiliary factor for the next life's body. Then, what is the immediate cause (Tibetan: ཉེར་ལེན་, meaning: immediate cause) of the next life's body? Another body, the next life's body as a phenomenon, you have an immediate cause, because the dying five aggregates (Tibetan: སྐྱེ་མཆེད་ལྔ་པོ་, meaning: five aggregates) of this life are the immediate cause of your generation. Here mostly... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If (the previous and subsequent lives) remain consistent, then the components (of the previous life) will not change, just like being born from the desire realm to the formless realm. If (the components) change, then the reason is not established, just like being born from the desire realm to the desire realm. It is unreasonable to explain this distinction as an answer, because in the state of two samadhis (meditative absorptions), the stream of consciousness is interrupted, and there is absolutely no form in the formless realm. This is only the view of the Vaibhashikas (the Particularists), not the view of the Sautrantikas (the Sutra Followers). The former believes that only similar things can be a direct cause, and cannot be interrupted by other things; the latter believes that matter is the substantial cause. The debate between the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas regarding the existence or non-existence of form in the formless realm is explained in great detail in the Abhidharmakosha and its commentaries. Explaining the meaning of the text as a distinction is also inconsistent with the literal meaning, because it is unrelated to 'the five senses of this life.' If it is said that similarity is not necessarily a direct cause, then this is also inconsistent with the distinction. The five senses of this life as the cause of form in the formless realm means that through the habits left by them, there is a subtle form that serves as the basis for consciousness, rather than saying that the five senses actually exist, because this would lead to beings in the formless realm having an intermediate state (bardo). The intention of the Ornamentor (Vasubandhu) and his followers in explaining habits as the cause is also this. No one in the Land of Snows (Tibet) has spoken as truthfully as this. Second, refuting the argument without connection: The body and mind at the time of death are not the cause and condition of the body and mind of the next life, because this is not observed. Answer: The body of the next life is a part of (the dying) body. Therefore, in order to refute that (the dying) body is the co-emergent condition of (the next life's) consciousness, and that (the dying) body itself is the immediate cause, the reason 'this is not observed' is not a valid reason for this subject, because it has been fully explained before that it is not a valid reason for determining the proposition. If it is said that although 'not observed' cannot negate, it can be negated by reasons such as 'being a sense organ' and 'being a mind.' Answer: The sense organs, etc., are not understandable for negating this, because for negating this, it still has uncertain doubts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
