Therefore, the sound that refers to the 'shape' and 'smell' of a pot, etc., has a purpose. This is because, among the many attributes of a pot, 'shape' and 'smell' etc., can specifically point out the differences in the ability to generate eye-consciousness, etc. For example, the sound 'the shape of a pot' shows the difference in the ability of the pot's shape. Similarly, 'the smell of sandalwood' and other things can also express differences in ability, because the smell of sandalwood can be distinguished from other smells. Multiple Limbs of the Body are Not a Valid Cause: Secondly, multiple limbs themselves are not a valid cause, which is divided into two situations: the collection of limbs is not a valid cause; each limb individually is not a valid cause. The Collection of Limbs is Not a Valid Cause: The first situation is: if, like the second view, the multiple limbs of the body are the direct cause of consciousness, then consciousness, if lacking one limb of the body, such as an ear, should not arise, because the collection of all the limbs of the body is your cause. Each Limb Individually is Not a Valid Cause: The second situation is divided into three: stating the harmful inference; refuting the defense against that inference; refuting the similarity to oneself. Stating the Harmful Inference: The first situation is: if, like the second view, then for a sentient being with a body, multiple streams of consciousness should arise simultaneously, because each limb of the body is capable of generating one consciousness. Refuting the Defense Against That Inference: The second situation is divided into two: one breath is not a valid cause for consciousness; multiple breaths are not a valid cause for consciousness. One Breath is Not a Valid Cause for Consciousness: The first situation is: even if there are multiple bodies, multiple consciousnesses will not arise simultaneously, because there is only one breath, so it is certain that one consciousness arises from that one breath. If this is the view, then breath, you cannot determine that only one consciousness can arise because you are one, because you, like the body, are composed of multiple particles. If someone says that this is not established because breath and body are constant and one, so consciousness arises sequentially. Then, for a sentient being with a body, multiple streams of consciousness should arise clearly and simultaneously, because the cause of multiple streams of consciousness, that is, the constant breath and body with unimpeded ability, are always close. If breath and body are constant and one, then the substance of multiple consciousnesses --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If asked: In what way is it not gradually produced? Answer: Breath and body are permanent dharmas, because they do not gradually produce consciousness. Because they are no different from things that do not produce consciousness before. Furthermore, even if the exhalation and inhalation of breath are one, for sentient beings, the exhalation and inhalation of breath are not necessarily one, therefore consciousness is not necessarily one. Because, like the outward flow of breath, even if it is one, it will produce consciousness that holds multiple meanings before and after. If you say: There is no pervasion, because a single undifferentiated consciousness can know multiple meanings before and after. Answer: This consciousness, when holding the previous meaning, will simultaneously hold multiple meanings before and after, because there is no contradiction in simultaneously holding multiple meanings before and after when holding the previous meaning. If it cannot be established, then this consciousness will not gradually hold multiple meanings before and after, because it is no different from things that do not hold multiple meanings after. Second, regarding multiple things not being suitable as the cause of consciousness: it is divided into two types, refuting the gradual production of multiple things, and refuting the simultaneous production of multiple things. First, refuting the gradual production of multiple things: If it is thought that multiple moments of breath, which are different from the breath itself, produced from the permanent dharma of the body, and have a sequential order, are the cause of sequential conceptual thoughts. Answer: How can these breaths be produced in a sequential order? They cannot be produced, because there is no cause for producing in a sequential order. If it cannot be established, then the previous moment of the same kind is the cause. Then, sentient beings, the first breath of this life will not arise, because before the breath of this life there is no such similar cause. If it cannot be established, then there will be a previous life. Even if there is a previous moment of the same kind of breath, the breath must be multiple, because it arises from different places. If you admit it, then for one person, multiple consciousnesses will arise simultaneously, because there are multiple breaths existing simultaneously. Second, refuting the simultaneous production of multiple things: If it is thought that even if there are multiple breaths, they do not produce consciousness separately, but multiple breaths at the same time are the cause of the same conceptual thought, therefore multiple consciousnesses will not arise simultaneously. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
