If it is changed by color, will you also be changed by color? If it is not changed, then you will also be understood as not being changed. Because you and the face are one and the same inseparable thing. Therefore, the body composed of numerous particles, having multiple attributes such as movement and non-movement, is itself numerous particles, not a single entity. In order to avoid excessive inferences, it is divided into two parts: stating the excessive inference, and refuting that inference. First, stating the excessive inference. The Vaisheshika school believes that objects with components such as the body and the pot are not single entities but rather collections of numerous atoms. Therefore, the body, pot, etc., should not be cognized by sensory consciousness, nor should they be able to obstruct or obscure objects. Because they are no different from the previous atoms, which are beyond the scope of sensory consciousness and cannot obstruct or obscure objects. Moreover, the later atoms are also the same as the previous atoms. Just like the state of the atoms before the formation of the gross object. Refuting that inference, divided into two parts: the indistinguishable atoms as the reason for the argument are not established; if established, then it is the same for other schools as well. First, the indistinguishable atoms as the reason for the argument are not established. The body, etc., even if you are an atom, it is not established that you are indistinguishable from the previous atom that transcends the senses, because you are born from the combination of the previous atom with other atoms, so you are different from the previous one. The atoms with special properties, such as the body, etc., even if you are essentially atoms, you are not called 'atoms', because even if you are atoms, you are the object of sensory consciousness by creating an image in it. This is mentioned in the 'Treasury of Reasoning with Self-Commentary' (a self-commentary on the Pramanavarttika): 'Even though the direct perception of the mind is a valid means of cognition, it cannot derive a necessary conclusion from it, so it does not obtain the name of a valid means of cognition.' For example, the object of sensory consciousness is an atom, but it does not appear there, so it is not considered an object. Nowadays, most people think that atoms are not the object of sensory consciousness, which is the view of this treatise, because they have not paid attention to the view of the Sautrantika school described in the 'Seven Treatises on Valid Cognition'. The Sautrantika school believes that atoms have no directional parts in space, and consciousness has no sequential parts in time, and these are real. Moreover, the direct perception and self-awareness that hold their meaning are infallible. Gross objects and continuums are all conventional truths, and the conceptual thoughts that hold them are mistaken. Therefore, since numerous atoms do not compose a single gross object, there is nothing other than atoms. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The coarse is actually non-existent, and sense consciousness cannot apprehend it, but the numerous atoms that touch each other are apprehended by sense consciousness, because they are the cause of generating appearances for sense consciousness. 'Atoms are not apprehended by sense consciousness' refers to those independent atoms that do not touch each other, which is the clear view of the Sutra School and the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition), without any error. Therefore, in this system, there are three stages of cause and effect in sense consciousness apprehending external objects: the cause of generating appearances, the appearance generated by it, and the object of cognition led by it. The first is the special atoms that touch each other. The second is the coarse appearance that appears in sense consciousness at its own time. The third is in the subsequent concept, the appearance that appears as a single entity, which is mistaken for an external object as something other than itself. The first is the external object, the second is the essence of sense consciousness itself, so it is not coarse, and the third is what is mistaken for coarse. Although the cause of generating appearances is atoms, because it is the reason for appearing as a coarse appearance in sense consciousness, the Mind-Only School says to the Sutra School: 'By what means do those atoms make it appear as a coarse thing?' This is the key to revealing its self-contradiction. Here, in Jamyang Shaypa's commentary, it says that although no Buddhist philosophical school holds the view of a substantially existent material object other than atoms, even if it were just explaining the views of the Seven Treatises, without even bothering to think about it, those scholars of the Land of Snows who boast of being proficient in the Seven Treatises, even without consulting each other, unanimously deny the name of the whole that is a collection of parts, and they believe that atoms cannot be apprehended by sense consciousness and cannot obstruct, but the coarse thing that is composed of them and is different from them actually exists, it can obstruct and can be apprehended by sense consciousness, the weight of the limb-atoms cannot be measured by scales, but the true weight of the coarse thing composed of them can be measured by scales, this is actually a replica of how the Vaiśeṣika school views the whole and the increase in weight. Je Tsongkhapa said: 'I am free from such a burden of ignorance, and those who freed me from this burden are the Sugatas of the three times and their retinues, their kindness to me is truly great.' For these words, those who now boast of being wise should carefully examine and study them! However, in this context, it is crucial to distinguish between the coarse appearance and the non-erroneous coarse thing. Showing that the second reason is not established is because the subject of the syllogism, using the second reason as the cause... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
