Relying on alcohol etc. leads to memory loss and ignorance, but it is not said that ignorance etc. are directly produced by alcohol etc. Rather, alcohol etc. cause differences in inner sensations, and the power arising from this changes the mind, thus showing the production of these (negative effects). Even if help is provided indirectly, it is not the direct cause. For example, in some mixtures of lineages, hearing the sound 'a tiger is coming,' or seeing blood shed for revenge on others, will sequentially lead to the production of fear etc., but these are not their direct causes. Fourth, briefly demonstrating the proof of the self-cause: Mind is the subject to be proven, because it is not the direct cause of body and mind, therefore it relies on the previous moment of mind. If the previous moment of mind does not exist, it will not arise. This is because, necessarily, the habitual actions of the previous moment of mind will subsequently have an influence. Fifth, there are three points: refuting the extreme view that body and mind are the same entity; arguing through the precedence of wrong views and craving, and the reason of self-cause; refuting the view that there is no past or future life simply because it is not seen. First, since it has already been refuted that mind is the result of the body, now refuting that it is the body's ability or merit. The body is the subject to be proven, just as the previous moment of mind relies on the mind that engages in hearing and crafts etc., at some point, you will also manifest the merits of hearing etc. Because you are not different from the mind that manifests these merits. Second, ordinary sentient beings are the subject to be proven, they always first desire to obtain happiness through attachment to self, and hope to get rid of suffering. They are not controlled by other powers such as Ishvara, but will accept inferior states. This is because, the inverted cognition of clinging to suffering as happiness, and the craving that binds to samsara, are the cause of rebirth. If a person does not have these two wrong views and craving, he will not be reborn. Third, if it is said that sentient beings have no past or future lives, because it is not seen coming from the future life, nor is it seen going to the future life, then (this is incorrect). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If all beings have not seen it, then it is not established. If you assert that which you yourself have not seen, then, O proponent of nihilism, you cannot prove that sentient beings do not transmigrate merely because you have not seen it, because your senses are unclear, and therefore you have not seen the birth of sentient beings, not because it does not exist. For example, just as someone with unclear vision does not see even a small amount of smoke. If that sentient being taking birth, it is not reasonable that they do not enter the place of birth without obstruction, because they have a body. If you say so, some beings with bodies can enter other beings with bodies without obstruction, because the intermediate state body, although it has a body, is a subtle and clear body, and therefore it enters the womb etc. without obstruction. For example, like water in a new clay pot, and like mercury in refined gold. If entering the womb is also not reasonable, because you have not seen it, then, O proponent of nihilism, it is not that there is no entering the womb because you have not seen it, because it has already been explained that you have not seen the entering of the womb because your senses are unclear. Refutation of inferring mind from body: The sixth [section] has two [parts]: It is not reasonable to take a single substance with limbs as a cause, nor is it reasonable to take a body with many limbs as a cause. It is not reasonable to take a single substance with limbs as a cause: The first [part] has three [points]: Refutation of a single substance with limbs, avoidance of excessive consequences, and explanation of refutations of other views. Refutation of a single substance with limbs: If it is the immediate cause of body and mind, is it the gross body of a single substance, or the body of many particles? If the former, then all the limbs of the body other than the hand, etc., should be such that if any one of the hand etc. moves, you should move, because any one of the hand etc. is indivisible and the same substance as you. This is necessarily so, because contradictory actions of moving and not moving are not possible for an indivisible single substance. If the hand moves, the limb moves, but the one with limbs does not move, then the one with limbs should be established as a different substance from the limb, because the limb moves while the other does not. Also, all the parts of the body other than the head should be such that if one like the head is covered with cloth, you should be covered, or if one is not covered with cloth, you should also be seen not covered with cloth, because you are indivisible and the same substance as the head. Also, all the limbs of the body other than the face should be such that if one like the face is smeared with paint, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
