Alternatively, even if the flesh bitten by a poisonous snake is cut off, it is certain to die. Why doesn't the dead flesh come back to life? Because it has a body, but lacks the conditions for changing the mind. Section Two: Refuting the Cause and Effect of Body and Mind as the Immediate Cause This section is divided into four subsections: If there is an immediate cause, there must be a reversal; if there is no reversal, there is no immediate cause; apply this to the current situation; and refute simultaneous existence. Subsection One: If there is an immediate cause, there must be a reversal In general, if the immediate cause does not change, then the effect produced by it will not change. For example, if the clay does not change, then the pottery, etc., produced from the clay as the immediate cause will not change. Subsection Two: If there is no reversal, there is no immediate cause If a cause does not change, but the effect produced by it changes, then that cause cannot be considered the immediate cause of that effect. For example, if the bull does not change, but the milk, etc., changes, then the bull cannot be considered the immediate cause of the milk. Subsection Three: Applying this to the current situation The body and mind are also the same. Just like the bull and milk, they are not the immediate cause and the immediate effect, because they do not have the characteristic of following and disappearing. Subsection Four: Refuting simultaneous existence If the body and mind are not the immediate cause and the immediate effect, then they cannot exist simultaneously. However, the body and mind of sentient beings with bodies do not exist simultaneously because they are the immediate cause and the immediate effect, but because the immediate cause of the body produces the subsequent body, and the mind is the simultaneously produced auxiliary factor, so they exist simultaneously. For example, when copper is heated by fire, the fire and the molten copper are produced simultaneously, because they both originate from the same cause. Section Three: Refuting the Relationship of Support and Supported that is not a Generating Cause This section is divided into two subsections: Presenting the conclusion; and refuting other views. Subsection One: Presenting the conclusion The body is not the support of consciousness, because it does not depend on the existence or non-existence of consciousness. Subsection Two: Refuting other views This section is divided into four subsections: Refuting dependence in the manner of an already established existence; refuting the analogy of an already established existence; excluding other already established existences in this way; and explaining in detail how the cause of existence prevents existence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refutation by being too extreme. Refutation after detailed analysis. Firstly, if the first argument does not hold, i.e., the body, which is the abode of the mind that has already been established, is the basis of the mind, then this body (as the subject) is not the abode of the mind that has already been established, because if one analyzes whether the abode of the mind is one with or different from the mind, it is unreasonable. Thus, if the abode of the mind is one with the abider, the mind, then the abode of the mind (as the subject), the body should not produce you, because you are not other than the abider, the mind, but are produced from the cause of the mind. If the abode of the mind is other than the abider, the mind, then this body (as the subject) has not done anything for the abode of the mind, because it is the cause of the abode of the mind that is other than the mind. Refutation by being too extreme. The second point is divided into two parts: presenting an extreme inference, and refuting the disclaimer. Presenting an extreme inference: Firstly, the mind (as the subject) will be indestructible, because the basis that makes it indestructible, the body, is eternally existent. Refuting the disclaimer: Secondly, if it is said that the body makes the mind indestructible, but the mind is destroyed because it encounters the cause of destruction, so there is no fault. Then, for the view that the destruction of the mind is produced by a later cause, analyzing whether the destruction of the mind is one with or different from the mind will also face the same extreme inference. If the destruction of the mind is one with the mind, then there is no need for a later cause to produce it; if it is other, then the cause of destruction will not destroy the mind, because destruction is a different entity from the mind. Furthermore, the cause of the abode of the mind (as the subject) has not done anything for the mind to be indestructible, because if the cause of destruction is not encountered, the mind will not be destroyed even without you; if the cause of destruction is encountered, even with you, it cannot make the mind indestructible. If it is said that before encountering the cause of destruction, the body makes the mind indestructible, then the mind (as the subject), the cause of the abode, the body, has no effect on you, because your destruction exists in the nature of your entity, which is not hindered by प्रमाण (pramāṇa, Pramana, valid cognition). Refuting the analogy of the established abode: Secondly, if it is said that the basis of the established abode, for example, the basis of the established abode of water is a vase, and the qualities and universals included in the aggregates, etc., are the basis of the established abode of matter, similarly, the body is also the basis of the established abode of the mind, then the vase, etc. (as the subject), you are not the abode of water, because water is a different entity from you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
