The characteristic of having an immediate cause is not composed of body and mind. In some cases, the body can help the continuity of the mind's state. However, merely helping the mind's state does not necessarily mean that the mind's continuity changes with the change of the body, because the body is not the immediate cause of the mind. For example, the hardness of a vase can be aided by fire, but the extinguishing of the fire does not interrupt the continuity of the vase. If the body is the substantial cause of the mind, it would lead to absurd conclusions. The third part has three sections: refuting overly extreme inferences, refuting defenses lacking favorable conditions, and refuting defenses with opposing conditions. Refuting overly extreme inferences: Firstly, if the meaning of 'that cause' (referring to the body as the cause of the mind) is taken to mean that the body is the substantial cause of the mind, then a corpse should still have a mind, because the body, as the substantial cause of the mind, still exists. Refuting defenses lacking favorable conditions: Secondly, if someone says that a corpse does not have a mind because it lacks the favorable condition of the mind—breath, then the mind produces breath, not breath produces the mind. Because when the mind exists, breath can be aided, and breath is controlled by the mind. Exhalation and inhalation do not arise without the mind's effort. Furthermore, the mind would become enhanced or diminished due to the enhancement or diminution of breath, because the mind is an object produced from the immediate cause of breath. Moreover, even if one considers the body to be the substantial cause of the mind and claims that a corpse lacks the condition of the mind—breath, it would still lead to the absurd conclusion that a corpse has breath, because the substantial cause of breath—the body—still exists. If you consider the previous moment of mind to be the cause of the subsequent moment of mind, it would also lead to the conclusion that a corpse has a mind. If mind is the cause of mind, then a corpse should have a mind, because the cause of mind is present. But this is not the case, because for this body, the actions of previous lives that enable the mind to reside are also the cause of the mind residing in the body, and a corpse does not possess all the causes for the mind to reside. Refuting defenses with opposing conditions: The third part has three sections: stating the position --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This demonstrates how to refute. It refutes the error of relying on examples. It summarizes and shows the various ways of reasoning. Text: Stating the expectation and refuting. Firstly, if wood etc. is the fuel for a lamp, but if there is an obstacle such as dampness, the lamp will not be produced. Similarly, if the body and mind are the material cause, but are discordant due to the fault of illness, i.e. an obstacle has arisen, then the dead body is not the cause of the mind, therefore, there is no fault in asserting that the mind remains in the dead body. If someone says: When death is caused by poison etc., the fault of the poison etc. has disappeared, i.e. it has reversed. Then, the subject, it should become alive again. Because the absence of illness is the condition for revival, and the body is complete as the material cause for revival. Refuting the error of relying on examples: Secondly, if it is said that there is no pervasion, just as after wood has been burned, the fire recedes, but the changes in the wood, such as ash etc., do not revert to wood, so when death occurs, even if the cause of the mind's change, such as poison etc., reverses, the mind does not reverse. Then, the change in body and mind caused by poison etc., the subject, should not be irreparable like burned wood, because there is a means of recovery. There is pervasion, in the cause of producing change, some things, like the change that fire makes to wood, cause the conditions of change to not occur again in some cases, thus producing change. Some things, like the change that fire makes to gold, produce a reversible change. Therefore, of these two, the first irreversible change is small and does not revert again. The second reversible change, whatever it is, will occur again, just as the change of melting gold will become solid again. If someone says: Then, this contradicts the medical texts that describe incurable diseases. Then, the statement in the medical texts that there are some diseases that are completely incurable does not refer solely to the fault of the disease, but because it is difficult to find doctors and medicines to treat the disease, or because the patient's life is exhausted. Other than that, if it were solely the fault of the disease, then there should be no incurable diseases, because if there is a disease, then it must be curable by medicine. Summarizing and showing the various ways of reasoning: Thirdly, after death, if the poison and plague etc. in the body reverse... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
