If it is said that it is not the cause of generating mind, but gradually generates mind, then, breath and body are permanent dharmas, because they are not incapable of gradually generating mind. Because they are no different in essence from the things that could not generate mind before. Furthermore, even if breathing in and out are considered to be the same thing, for sentient beings, breathing in and out are not necessarily one, therefore mind is not necessarily one. For example, when breath flows outward, one thought can simultaneously grasp many successive meanings. If the senses such as the eyes are harmed by adverse conditions, then in reality there is no harm to you. The senses such as the eyes depend on your mind, and if the mind changes due to sorrow, etc., you will see the changes. Because the senses depend on the mind, therefore, sentient beings, your later mind arises from the previous mind, because the basis on which your later mind depends is precisely the previous mind, and some of the functions of the previous mind are the cause of the later senses. Therefore, if this function that depends on the previous mind can trigger the later senses, then later, that is, at the time of death, the phenomenon of mind generating senses will change, because the causes and conditions for its generation are complete and there are no obstacles. The *Rigter* says: 'Causes and conditions are complete and there are no obstacles, with its signs, the endless end can be proven.' This is what it means. Second, refuting views that contradict the scriptures. If someone says: 'The body and mind are interdependent.' This contradicts the scriptures. Then, such a statement does not directly state that the mind depends on the body, but rather that the body helps the body's consciousness, and the body's consciousness helps the mind, therefore the mind depends on the body indirectly. Third, if proven by reasoning, it will lead to self-contradiction. If someone says: 'The senses are the direct basis of the mind, because without the senses, the mind cannot arise.' Then, this mind should also be the direct basis of the senses, because without the mind, the senses cannot arise. Even if you accept this view, then consciousness and the senses should be mutually causal after death, because they are mutually causal at the time of death. The third part is divided into two points: First, refuting overly extreme reasoning; second, refuting by self-contradictory promises. If it arises from a permanent body, it will lead to overly extreme conclusions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refuting the Arguments of the Lokayata (Materialists) Firstly: If the Lokayata concedes that a permanent body gives rise to consciousness, then the body, as the subject of debate, should not give rise to a continuous consciousness from you (the body), because you are a non-continuous permanence. Refuting the Avoidance of Faults by Admitting Errors Secondly: If it is said that the pervasion is not established, because the permanent body relies on conditions to generate continuous consciousness. Then the body, as the subject of debate, should also not rely on conditions, because conditions cannot make it distinct. If it is said that relying on continuous consciousness, the permanent body can also gradually generate consciousness, then there is no fault. Then the body, as the subject of debate, should make its continuity clear, that is, have a sequential order, because relying on continuous consciousness, it is the cause of generating continuous consciousness. If admitted, then the embodied being, as the subject of debate, each previous moment of your body and mind should be the cause of the subsequent moment, because your body and mind are a continuous stream with a sequential order. If admitted, then the embodied being, as the subject of debate, the previous moment of body and mind being the cause of the subsequent moment of body and mind, in all cases, you should also see it at the moment of death, because the previous moment of your body and mind is the cause of the subsequent moment of your body and mind. If admitted, then the future life is established. Detailed Explanation of Connection Without Contradiction Secondly, the detailed explanation of connection without contradiction is divided into three points: The reason for the death consciousness is uncertain, its homogeneous example lacks the property, and refuting the proof of non-emptiness. The Reason for the Death Consciousness is Uncertain Firstly, the Lokayata says: The mind of an ordinary person at the moment of death, as the subject of debate, does not connect to the next life, because it is a death consciousness, like the death consciousness of an Arhat. Then the mind at the moment of death, as the subject of debate, the reason you (the Lokayata) use to prove that the mind of an ordinary person at the moment of death does not connect to the next life is incorrect, because your mind connects to other minds, which contradicts valid cognition, which does not exist. Its Homogeneous Example Lacks the Property Secondly, the mind of an Arhat at the moment of death, as the subject of debate, the homogeneous example you (the Lokayata) use to prove that the mind of an ordinary person at the moment of death does not connect to the next life is incorrect, because you believe that it does not connect to any valid cognition, because there is no established valid cognition. Refuting the Proof of Non-Emptiness Thirdly, it is divided into two points: Refuting the view established by Buddhist scriptures, and refuting the Lokayata's own arguments.
