Gross objects do not exist in reality, and sense consciousness cannot apprehend them. However, numerous atoms that are in contact with each other are apprehended by sense consciousness because they are the cause of generating appearances for sense consciousness. The statement that 'sense consciousness does not apprehend atoms' refers to individual atoms that are not in contact with each other. This is the definitive view of the Sutra School and the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition), without any error. Therefore, in this system, the apprehension of external objects by sense consciousness occurs in three stages of cause and effect: the cause that generates the appearance, the appearance generated by it, and the object of ascertainment drawn by it. The first is the specific atoms that are in contact with each other. The second is the gross appearance that appears to sense consciousness at its own time. The third is the 'other-exclusion' (apoha), where the appearance that appears as a single entity in subsequent conceptual thought is falsely attributed to an external object. The first is the external object, the second is the nature of sense consciousness itself and is therefore not gross, and the third is what is falsely attributed as gross. Although the cause of generating the appearance is atoms, the Mind-Only School uses the following question to reveal the contradiction in the Sutra School, due to the fact that a gross appearance appears to sense consciousness: 'By what means do those atoms cause such a gross appearance?' This is the key point. Here, in the commentary of the 'Elegant Ornament' (Jam-sgé), it is mentioned that although the view of asserting self-characterized gross matter other than atoms does not exist in Buddhist tenets, even if it is only explaining the tenets of the Seven Treatises, the Tibetan logicians of the Snow Land who boast of being learned in the Seven Treatises, even without consultation, unanimously reject the name of a whole that is different from its parts. They assert that although atoms cannot be apprehended by sense consciousness and cannot obstruct, a self-characterized gross object composed of and different from those atoms does exist in reality. It can obstruct and can be apprehended by sense consciousness, and although the weight of the whole cannot be known by weighing the weight of the atoms, the true weight of the gross object composed of them can be known by weighing. This is actually accepting how the Vaiśeṣika School views wholes and weight. (Tsongkhapa) said: 'The Buddhas of the three times and their retinues have been very kind to me, freeing me from this burden of ignorance.' Those who boast of being learned these days should examine this. However, in this context, it is crucial to distinguish between the gross appearance and the actual gross object. By showing that these two reasons are not established, it can be concluded that, using these two reasons as the cause, your system... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, obstacles to things like land are also eliminated, because bodies and other things show that they are born with the ability to obstruct, having previously combined with other particles. If it is established, then it is the same for other aspects. The second case is that of gold-mercury amalgam or hot and cold, etc., as the subject of debate (chos can), why do they not appear to sense consciousness (dbang shes)? Because they are not composed of many particles without a component. The collection of sense organs (dbang) and mental activity (yid la byed pa), etc., as the subject of debate, how can the arising of cognitive sense consciousness be, since it is not? Because they are no different from the previous sense organs, etc., that do not have the ability to generate sense consciousness separately. Both sides accept this reason. If it is said that the collection of sense organs, etc., generates combination, and combination generates sense consciousness, then the collection of sense organs, etc., wanting to generate combination, here too, the collection of sense organs, etc., as the subject of debate, cannot generate combination, because they are no different from the previous sense organs, etc., that do not have the ability to generate combination. The situation is the same. If it is said that gold and mercury, when mixed, even if there is no substance with components, there is a combination of dissimilar types of particles, so they appear, then sense consciousness, as the subject of debate, how does cognition arise from the combination of gold and mercury particles? Because the gold and mercury particles themselves, which are the basis of the combination, are not visible. Furthermore, combination is a quality (yon tan), and if it is believed that a quality does not have a second quality, then a drink mixed with sugar and alcohol, as the subject of debate, contradicts you having a combination of taste and form, etc., because you are a quality. If it is said that it does not have real taste and form, but it mixes with the real taste and form in the particles of the drink, so it has taste and form, and these terms are used nominally for convenience, then the taste and form of a drink mixed with sugar and alcohol, as the subject of debate, will transform into a different appearance in the mind than the real taste and form, but will not transform into the consciousness of real taste and form, because the taste and form are imputed. A string of eggs strung together, as the subject of debate, how can the term 'long' be applied even nominally? Because you are a number, you do not have the quality of 'long', and there is no identity with the concept of 'long'. Explaining the refutation of the opponent's view. The third part is divided into two parts: refuting the view that numbers, etc., have differences in things; eliminating the debate on the view that there are no differences. Refuting the view that numbers, etc., have differences in things. The first part is divided into three parts: establishing the proof of non-difference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
