Refutation of Establishment by the Words of the Buddha Firstly: If you Buddhists say that 'fame' itself is an example according to your tenets, then, O Outsider (Vaisheshika), you should not assert that the mind of an Arhat (Sanskrit: Arhat, a liberated being who will not be reborn) at the time of death does not produce a subsequent mind, because the tenets of you Buddhists are not valid tenets. Why do you follow any tenets that are not established by valid cognition? Here, Lha Shakya says that the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not produce a subsequent mind is the ultimate meaning, while producing a subsequent mind is a provisional statement. Although Nyima and others hold the opposite view, here it is only to reveal the self-contradiction of the Outsider (Vaisheshika) that they are asked why the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not produce a subsequent mind, not that our own view is that it does not produce a subsequent mind. Refutation of Establishment by the Outsider's (Vaisheshika) Own Reasoning Secondly, it is divided into four parts: stating the view and posing questions; elaborating on the refuting reasoning; dispelling the fallacious arguments arising from it; revealing the conclusion established by the refutation. Stating the View and Posing Questions Firstly: If the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not produce a subsequent mind because that mind has separated from the body, then why not use the reason 'separated from the body' to prove that the last mind of an ordinary person at the time of death does not produce a subsequent mind either? It should be possible to say so, because the reason is the same. If you agree, then what is the use of this uncertain 'mind at the time of death'? It is meaningless. Elaborating on the Refuting Reasoning Secondly, it is divided into six parts: refuting that the body itself is the direct cause of consciousness; refuting that the body and mind are cause and effect with close connection; refuting the relationship of support and supported that are not producers; refuting the cause and effect of body and mind by other reasoning; refuting that consciousness is the nature of the body; refuting that consciousness arises dependent on the body. Refuting that the Body Itself is the Direct Cause of Consciousness Firstly, it is divided into three parts: refuting the direct cause through analysis; merely a cause but not a decisive factor; if it were a direct cause, it would lead to absurd conclusions. Refuting the Direct Cause Through Analysis Firstly: If you say that the reason 'separated from the body' can be used to prove both the example and the subject of debate, i.e., it does not produce a subsequent mind, then does consciousness arise from a body with sense faculties or without sense faculties? For the time being, consciousness does not arise directly from a body with sense faculties. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
