If it is said that it is produced gradually by non-consciousness, then breath and body are permanent dharmas, because they are not incapable of gradually producing consciousness. Because there is no difference between the breath and body that did not previously produce consciousness and the permanent dharma. Furthermore, even if breathing is considered to be singular, for sentient beings, the exhalation and inhalation of breath do not necessarily lead to a singular consciousness. For example, when breath flows outward, a consciousness arises that simultaneously holds multiple prior and subsequent meanings. If the senses such as the eyes are harmed by obstacles, then there is no direct harm to you. These senses such as the eyes depend on your consciousness, because when consciousness changes due to sorrow etc., you see the changes. Because the senses depend on consciousness, the later consciousness of sentient beings arises from the earlier consciousness, because the basis on which the later consciousness relies, namely the earlier consciousness, is the cause of the later senses. Therefore, if the action that relies on the earlier consciousness is the impeller of the later senses, then even at the time of death, consciousness will produce the senses, because the cause of producing the senses is complete and without obstacles. In the *Ratnagotravibhāga* it says: 'Causes are complete and without obstacles, by its signs one attains the endless future.' This is the meaning here. Refuting contradictions with scripture: Second, if someone says: 'Body and mind are mutually dependent.' This contradicts the scriptures. Then, such scriptures do not say that consciousness directly depends on the body, but rather that the body helps the body's consciousness, and the body's consciousness helps consciousness, therefore consciousness is said to depend on the body indirectly. If proven by reasoning, there will be self-contradiction: Third, if someone says: 'The senses are the direct basis of consciousness, because consciousness does not arise without the senses.' Then, consciousness should also be the direct basis of the senses, because the senses do not arise without consciousness. If this view is accepted, then consciousness and the senses become mutual causes and effects after death, because they are mutual causes at the time of death. If it arises from a permanent body, it will be too absolute: The third part is divided into two parts: refuting the reasoning of being too absolute, and refuting by negating the contradiction of the promise. Too absolute: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refuting the Arguments of the Lokayata (Materialists) Firstly, if the Lokayata concedes that consciousness arises from a permanent body, then the body, as the subject of debate, should not give rise to gradual consciousness from you (the body), because you are a permanent entity that is not gradual. Refuting the Avoidance of Faults by Admitting Errors Secondly, if it is said that the pervasion does not exist because the permanent body relies on conditions to generate gradual consciousness, then the body, as the subject of debate, should also not rely on conditions, because conditions cannot make it distinct. If it is said that relying on gradual consciousness, gradual consciousness can also arise from the permanent body, so there is no fault, then the body, as the subject of debate, its graduality should be clarified, that is, having a sequential order, because it relies on gradual consciousness to be the cause of generating gradual consciousness. If admitted, then the embodied being, as the subject of debate, each preceding moment of your body and mind should be the cause of the subsequent moment, because your body and mind are a continuous sequence with a preceding and subsequent order. If admitted, then the embodied being, as the subject of debate, the preceding body and mind being the cause of the subsequent body and mind, in all cases, you should also see it at the time of your final death, because the preceding body and mind are the cause of the subsequent body and mind. If admitted, then the arising of the next life is established. Detailed Explanation of Non-Contradictory Connection Secondly, the detailed explanation of non-contradictory connection is divided into three parts: the reason for the death consciousness is uncertain, its example of similarity lacks the property, and refuting the proof of non-emptiness. The Reason for the Death Consciousness is Uncertain Firstly, the Lokayata says: the mind of an ordinary person at the time of their final death, as the subject of debate, does not connect to the subsequent consciousness, because it is a death consciousness, like the death consciousness of an Arhat. Then, the mind at the time of final death, as the subject of debate, you should not be a valid reason for proving that the mind of an ordinary person at the time of their final death does not connect to the subsequent consciousness, because there is nothing that contradicts the connection of you with other minds and valid cognition. Its Example of Similarity Lacks the Property Secondly, the mind of an Arhat at the time of death, as the subject of debate, you should not be a valid example of similarity for proving that the mind of an ordinary person at the time of their final death does not connect to the subsequent consciousness, because you are considered not to be connected from valid cognition, because there is no valid cognition to establish it. Refuting the Proof of Non-Emptiness The third part is divided into two points: refuting the view established by Buddhist scriptures, and refuting the Lokayata's own arguments.
