Things themselves do not exist in reality, and sense consciousness cannot directly grasp them. However, when numerous atoms come into contact with each other, sense consciousness can grasp them because they are the cause of the appearance for sense consciousness. The statement that 'sense consciousness cannot grasp atoms' refers to those independent atoms that are not in contact with each other. This is the clear view of the Sutra School and the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition), without any error. Therefore, in this system, when sense consciousness grasps external objects, there are three stages of cause and effect: the cause that generates the appearance, the appearance generated by it, and the object of cognition induced by it. The first is the special atoms that are in contact with each other. The second is the coarse appearance that appears in sense consciousness itself. The third is the appearance that appears as a single entity in subsequent conceptualization, which is mistaken for an external object, i.e., 'other-exclusion'. The first is the external object, and the second is the essence of sense consciousness itself, so it is not coarse, and the third is mistaken for coarse. Although the atoms are the cause of generating the appearance, because they are the cause of the coarse appearance appearing in sense consciousness, the Sutra School questions the Mind-Only School: 'How can these atoms produce such a coarse appearance?' This is the key to revealing their self-contradiction. Here, in Jamyang Shaypa's commentary, it is mentioned that although no Buddhist school believes in the existence of real matter independent of atoms, even if it is only explaining the tenets of the Seven Treatises, those Tibetan scholars who claim to be proficient in the Seven Treatises have never seriously considered it. Without consultation, they unanimously deny the name of the whole that is independent of the parts. They believe that sense consciousness cannot grasp atoms, and atoms cannot obstruct things, but the coarse things composed of these atoms and different from these atoms are real. It can obstruct things and can be grasped by sense consciousness. Even if it is impossible to understand it by measuring the weight of atoms, it is possible to understand the real weight of the coarse things composed of atoms by measurement. They are actually acknowledging the form and weight of the whole as advocated by the Vaiśeṣika school. I (Tsongkhapa) am very grateful to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past, present, and future, whose compassion has freed me from this burden of ignorance. I hope that the self-proclaimed scholars of today will conduct some investigation into this. However, in this context, it is crucial to distinguish between coarse appearance and real coarse things.’ By demonstrating that the second and third reasons are not established, it is pointed out here that the subject matter, these two reasons, cannot be used as the cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, objections that assert hindrances caused by particles are refuted, because it is shown that bodies and so on arise as distinct entities capable of causing hindrances from the combination of prior particles with other particles. If established, the same applies to the opponent's position. The second case involves examples such as mercury mixed with gold, or hot and cold conditions. How do these appear to sense consciousness? They should not appear, because they are not composed of numerous particles of a single substance without parts. Consider the collection of sense faculties and mental attention. How do they generate cognition and sense consciousness? They should not, because they are no different from the prior sense faculties and so on that lack the ability to generate sense consciousness separately. Both reasons are accepted. If it is argued that the collection of sense faculties and so on generates conjunction, and conjunction generates sense consciousness, then the assertion that the collection of sense faculties and so on generates conjunction also applies here. The collection of sense faculties and so on should also be unable to generate conjunction, because they are no different from the prior sense faculties and so on that are unable to generate conjunction. The situation is analogous. If it is argued that gold and mercury, even without a substance composed of parts, have conjunction due to the combination of dissimilar types of particles, and therefore they appear, then how does sense consciousness cognize the conjunction of mixed gold and mercury particles? It should not cognize it, because the particles of gold and mercury themselves, which are the basis of the conjunction, are not visible. Furthermore, if conjunction is considered a quality, and a quality cannot have a second quality, then the beverage mixed with sugar and alcohol should contradict having taste, form, and so on, because it is a quality. If it is argued that it does not have real taste and form, but because it is mixed with the particles of the beverage that have real taste and form, it has taste and form, then the taste and form of the beverage mixed with sugar and alcohol should differ in appearance to the mind from real taste and form, and should not become the cognition of real taste and form, because it is an imputed taste and form. How can a string of beads strung together be called 'long' even if it is nominally designated as such? It should not, because you are a number, lack the quality of length, and are not identical with 'long'. Explanation of Refutations to Other's Positions The third section has two parts: refuting the existence of difference in number etc. in substances; and avoiding disputes regarding the position of non-difference. Refuting the Existence of Difference in Number etc. in Substances The first part has three sections: establishing the proof of non-difference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
