The characteristic of something that has [consciousness] is not constituted by body and mind. However, in some instances, the body can assist the continuum of consciousness by influencing it. Nevertheless, merely because the body assists the continuum of consciousness, it does not necessarily follow that when the body ceases, the continuum of consciousness also ceases, because the body is not the direct cause of consciousness. For example, fire can help to enhance the solidity of objects like vases, but when the fire ceases, the continuum of objects like vases does not cease. If the body is considered a direct cause, it leads to absurd conclusions. The third part is divided into three sections: refuting arguments that lead to absurd conclusions, refuting rebuttals based on the absence of conducive conditions, and refuting rebuttals based on the presence of adverse conditions. Refuting arguments that lead to absurd conclusions: Firstly, if ‘that is the cause’ (referring to the body as the cause) is understood to mean that the body is the direct cause of consciousness, then a corpse should still possess consciousness, because the body, which is the direct cause of consciousness, still exists. Refuting rebuttals based on the absence of conducive conditions: Secondly, if someone argues that a corpse does not have consciousness because it lacks the conducive condition for consciousness—breath—then consciousness is not produced by breath; rather, you (consciousness) produce breath. If you (consciousness) exist and assist breath, then breath will exist, and breath is dependent on you. Exhalation and inhalation are not produced without cause; they are produced by your effort. Furthermore, consciousness, if the increase and decrease of breath cause your increase and decrease, it is because you are produced by breath. Moreover, those who consider the body to be the direct cause of consciousness and argue that a corpse lacks the condition for consciousness—breath—will also face the same absurd conclusion: a corpse should have breath, because the direct cause of breath—the body—still exists. If you consider the previous moment of consciousness to be the cause of the subsequent moment of consciousness, then you will also face the same conclusion that a corpse has consciousness. If consciousness is the cause of consciousness, then a corpse should have consciousness, because the cause of consciousness is complete. But this is not the case, because for this body, the other karmas of previous lives that cause consciousness to reside in it are also the cause of consciousness residing in the body, so a corpse does not have the complete cause for consciousness to reside in it. Refuting rebuttals based on the presence of adverse conditions: The third part is divided into three sections: stating the view and pointing out the harm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Showing the method. Refuting the faults of relying on examples. Summarizing and showing the aspects of reasoning. Stating the desired and showing the harm. Firstly, if trees and so on are the material cause of a lamp, but if there is an obstacle such as dampness, the lamp will not be produced. Similarly, if the body and mind are the substantial cause, but are incompatible due to the fault of illness, i.e., become an obstacle, then the dead body is not the cause of the mind, so there is no fault of the mind remaining in the dead body. If you say that, then when the fault of poison etc. has diminished, i.e., has reversed, due to death by poison etc., the subject, should again become alive. Because there is no obstacle to life, no illness, and the substantial cause of life, a complete body, is present. Refuting the faults of relying on examples. Secondly, if the pervasion does not exist, because after the wood has been burned, although the fire returns, the changes in the wood, such as ash, etc., do not return to the state of wood. Similarly, at death, although the cause of the mind's change, poison etc., reverses, the mind does not return. If you say that, then the changes in body and mind caused by poison etc., the subject, should not be impossible to restore like burned wood, because there is a means of restoration. The pervasion exists, because among the causes that produce change, some things, like the change caused by fire to wood, cause the conditions of change to not occur again in some cases, thus producing change. Some things, like the change caused by fire to gold, produce a reversible change. Therefore, of these two, the first irreversible change, even if small, will not reverse again, while the second, whatever reversible change is made, will occur again, just as the melting of gold solidifies again. If so, it contradicts the medical texts that describe incurable diseases. Saying in the medical texts that there are some diseases that are completely incurable is not referring solely to the faults of the disease, but is said considering the difficulty of finding doctors and medicine to cure the disease, or the exhaustion of the patient's lifespan. Other than that, if it were solely the fault of the disease, then there should be no incurable diseases, because if there is a disease, then it is pervaded by being curable by medicine. Summarizing and showing the aspects of reasoning. Thirdly, after death, do the poison and epidemics etc. in the body reverse? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
