Refutation of Establishment by the Buddha's Words Firstly: If you Buddhists say that 'fame' itself is an example according to your tenets, then, the materialist (lokāyata) is the subject, it should not be asserted that the mind of an Arhat (arhat) at the time of death does not have a subsequent continuum, because the Buddhist tenet is not a valid tenet. Any tenet that follows what is not established by valid cognition, or should not be followed. Here, Lha Shakya said that the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not generate a subsequent mind, which is the definitive meaning, while generating a subsequent mind is the provisional meaning. Although Nyima and others have stated the opposite, here it is only to reveal the self-contradictory commitment of the materialist that the reason why the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not have a subsequent continuum is asked, not that our own view is that there is no subsequent continuum. Refutation of Establishment by the Materialist's Own Reasoning Secondly, it is divided into four points: stating the assertion and posing the question; elaborating on the reasoning of refutation; dispelling erroneous arguments against it; revealing the conclusion established by the refutation. Stating the Assertion and Posing the Question Firstly: If the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not generate a subsequent mind because that mind is separated from the body, then, that separation from the body itself is the subject, why is it not also stated when proving that the last mind of an ordinary person at the time of death does not generate a subsequent mind? It should be stated, because there is reason to state it. Why should it be stated as the probans of the example? Because the reason is the same. If it is admitted, then what is the use of the non-pervasive mind at the time of death? It is meaningless. Elaborating on the Reasoning of Refutation Secondly, it is divided into six points: refuting that the body itself is the direct cause of consciousness; refuting that the body and mind are cause and effect with an immediate cause; refuting the relationship of support and supported that does not produce an effect; refuting the cause and effect relationship of body and mind with other reasoning; refuting that consciousness is the nature of the body; refuting that consciousness is generated depending on the body. Refuting that the Body Itself is the Direct Cause of Consciousness Firstly, it is divided into three points: refuting that it is the direct cause through analysis; being merely a cause cannot establish the counter-property; if it is the direct cause, then there are too many faults. Refuting that it is the Direct Cause Through Analysis Firstly: If you say that the reason (separation of body and mind) is the probans of not generating a subsequent mind in both the example and the subject of debate, then, if consciousness arises from the body, does it arise from a body with sense faculties or from a body without sense faculties? For the time being, consciousness does not arise directly from a body with sense faculties, because... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From a rational perspective, the nature of mind (yid shes, consciousness) is: just like the consciousness of the eye, it should also be able to clearly perceive objects. This is because it is another consciousness that actually arises from the sensory power of the eye. The other sensory powers should also be understood in the same way. If someone argues that this excludes consciousness from arising from the collection of the five senses, but rather arises from each sense individually, then, the nature of the five senses is: even if you all gather together, it is impossible to actually produce a single mind, because you each have the ability to produce different consciousnesses such as eye consciousness as your own result. If mind actually arises from a body without senses, then, the nature of a body without senses is: it is impossible for you to actually produce the cognition of mind from it, because you yourself are without mind. If the body and mind are not the relationship of support and supported, then their simultaneous existence would be contradictory. The nature of a body with a body and the cognition of mind is: they do not exist simultaneously because they are the relationship of support and supported, but because they arise from the same cause, they can exist simultaneously. For example, just as the five senses of some beings exist simultaneously, or like the shape and taste that depend on the same collection exist simultaneously. If the body changes due to illness, etc., then the mind will also change, because the mind actually depends on the body. Then, some other external things, such as blood flowing from being stabbed by a weapon, its nature is: you should also be the support of the mind, because through you, the mind also changes. Merely a cause, but not a determinant: The second point is the meaning of 'cause'. If the body is considered to be the cause that helps the mind produce differences, then the statement that if the body does not exist, the mind does not exist, is not universally applicable. For example, the nature of all results is: anything that helps its essence before its existence is its direct cause, and if this cause disappears, the result will also disappear, which is inevitable, because it always follows the thing that helps its essence before its existence. The cause precedes the result, therefore, the Blessed One (bCom ldan 'das, Bhagavan) said: 'This exists, therefore that arises', and 'This arises, therefore that arises'. The seventh case word 'This exists, therefore' (di yod na, if this exists), and the fifth case word 'This arises, therefore' (di skyes pa'i phyir, therefore arises), both indicate that the cause exists before the result. And the two words 'This arises' (di 'byung, this arises) and 'This arises' (di skye, this arises) indicate that the result exists after the cause. This is to understand that the cause exists before the result, therefore it is necessary to explain the direct cause and the direct cause in this way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
