In this world, whether great or small, rich or poor, none can escape the clutches of the Lord of Death. As it is said: life is like a dewdrop, about to disappear; breath is like a mist, about to vanish; the body is like an illusion, existing yet not; the mind is like lightning, momentary. In general, this precious human body with leisure and opportunity is as difficult to obtain as the udumbara flower, and as easily destroyed as a butter lamp in the middle of a field. In particular, the length of life and the causes of death are not definite, depending on the accumulation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions in one's previous lives. As it is said in the Ratnavali: 'The causes of death are many, while the causes of life are few.' And as the prince Shantideva said: 'Without stopping day and night, this life is constantly decaying, and there is no additional increase coming from elsewhere, so why should I not be subject to death?' As it is said, the causes of life are few and the causes of death are many. Some die as soon as they are born, some die as young children, some die as adults, and some die in old age. Some die from disease, some from weapons, and some from famine. Some die from their own actions, and some die from the actions of others. All these beings must unwillingly separate from their bodies and minds, and there is no way to prevent it. The disease that takes life cannot be cured by the doctor who heals. The Yama, Lord of Death, cannot be stopped by the short spear of Rahu, the planet that seizes. The ripening of karma cannot be controlled by the power of the glorious Vajrapani. Thus, when the time of death comes, the leftover food, the unworn clothes, the unfinished work, and the beloved illusory body will all be involuntarily abandoned. The loving father, the caring mother, the beloved child, the lifelong wife, the accumulated wealth, whatever one may have, one will not even have the power to look at them with one's eyes, and one must die. Likewise, now you too have embarked on the great path of beings, and you are not alone in suffering the pain of death, so do not grieve, do not suffer, do not be afraid, do not panic, do not be terrified. Now I will show you the essential instructions.
