Qualities. The faults of not obtaining [them] are: In the Vajrasattva Heart Mirror, it says: Without relying on the empowerment of secret mantra, how can accomplishment occur? For example, like a boatman without oars, how can one cross to the other shore? Also, in Klong gsal, it says: Having obtained empowerment, the lineage ripens, the door of Dharma opens, all the meanings of secret mantra will be accomplished. Again, in the Heart Mirror, it says: If all empowerments are fully obtained, all secret mantras will be accomplished without practice. Also, in Klong gsal, it says: If the empowerment of secret mantra is not obtained, how can profound meaning and siddhi be obtained? So it is said.

In addition, one should be easygoing, broad-minded, patient, and kind. They should be helpful, compassionate, far-sighted, able to endure hardship, and fond of seclusion. One should always associate with and never separate from a supreme Dharma friend who shares one's views and conduct and whose actions are in accordance with the Dharma. Such a special friend is needed, along with the benefits of associating with them and the faults of not doing so. As it says in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The supreme accomplishment of a single lifetime, the essence, comes from a special friend." It also says: "A supreme Dharma friend, possessing Dharma, attains enlightenment." And: "Abandoning a friend of happiness, only suffering arises." One should, together with such a supreme Dharma friend, practice the stages of the preliminary practices, the main practice, and the subsequent practices, just as the venerable Lama has taught, without error. First, after explaining the meaning of virtue, the stages of explaining the meaning of virtue in between. The order of preliminary practices. The common preliminaries. The second summary, the stages of explaining the meaning of virtue in between, are divided into: preliminary practices, main practice, and subsequent practices. First, the order of preliminary practices is divided into two: common and uncommon. First, the common preliminaries are: the common preliminaries of the vehicle, the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, contemplating impermanence, the law of karma, the suffering of samsara, and contemplating the benefits of liberation, these five; and the common preliminaries of secret mantra, refuge, generating bodhicitta, the practice and recitation of Vajrasattva, mandala, and guru yoga, these ten. In accordance with other common practices, one should properly cultivate the stages of taming one's mind stream. Or, as it says in the "Vast Expanse of Clarity" tantra: "Loving-kindness and compassion are the common path of Dharma, for the sake of entering the Great Vehicle." And as it says in the "Past and Future Meaning Instructions": "Cultivate impermanence, compassion, and bodhicitta." Among these, emphasizing the cultivation of impermanence, compassion, and bodhicitta, it is thus stated directly in the instructions. First, contemplating impermanence, as it says in the Sutra of the Noble Samadhi King: "When this world realm, and all the worlds become like space, just as before, so it will be again, all dharmas are"

Please be sure to understand. As it is said, the external, stable container world, Mount Meru, the four continents, the surrounding iron mountains, and the underlying foundation, will also be burned by seven fires, washed away by water, and destroyed by wind, eventually becoming empty. Therefore, it is certain to be impermanent. Similarly, in the "Collection of Special Sayings," it says: The king with seven treasures, And other small kings, ministers, Monks, Brahmins, householders, etc., All these beings are impermanent, Like experiences in a dream. As it is said, when considering the internal, moving sentient beings, they are also impermanent, unstable, and quickly perish. Seeing and hearing the deaths of countless enemies, friends, and neutral beings, one can also determine that one's own death is uncertain. Moreover, the scholar hero said: Even the bodies of the Buddhas, Adorned with excellent marks and signs, The vajra body is also impermanent, What need is there to mention ordinary beings? As it is said, the teacher of beings, including gods, along with his retinue, is also impermanent. Omniscient Longchenpa said: Brahma, Indra, the fierce one with a thousand eyes, The son without desire will also be impermanent, going to another world. As it is said, if we contemplate the fact that the lords of beings, who are great, noble, and high in the three realms of existence, are also impermanent, then there is certainly no doubt about death. In the "Wish-Fulfilling Treasury," it says: Because of the changes of the four seasons and ages, both externally and internally, It is certain that one will die impermanently, so abandon the clinging to permanence. Form is a dust particle, time is a moment, Like lightning flashing in the sky, it is impermanent. As it is said, whether it is the external changes of the four seasons, the internal rise and fall of the four elements, the secret changes in body, mind, actions, and so on, no matter from which aspect we consider it, it is impossible to know which will come first, tomorrow's affairs or the next life. It is obvious that one cannot be certain when one will die. There are many causes of death, and there is no disease or evil spirit that will not cause death. The so-called impermanence of life and death will come suddenly. The constructed houses, accumulated wealth, close relatives, and friends are of no help. One must go alone, bearing the burden of one's karma. Thinking that only the sacred Dharma is beneficial for death, it is said in the "Extensive Play Sutra": The three realms of existence are impermanent, like autumn clouds, This time of close association will eventually be destroyed and separated. The four seasons are impermanent, changing and meaningless, Aging and decaying is the law of death.
