To differentiate, there are the views of common characteristics and the views of the nature of reality itself. The views of common characteristics are the different assertions of each of the nine vehicles. The view of the nature of reality itself is: outwardly, looking at the appearances of objects gathered by the six aggregates, one sees that appearances have no inherent existence, like stars in the ocean. Inwardly, looking at the essence of the emptiness of reality, one sees that all things are not established as having inherent existence, like the center of the sky. Secretly, looking at awareness, one sees and realizes with the senses, without being limited to conceptual thought, which is called the view of effortless perfection. The way to practice it is: outwardly, looking at external appearances, one sees whatever appears as like dreams and illusions, and without abandoning delusion, one purifies it in its own place, and afflictions are liberated in their own place. Inwardly, looking at the mind of flowing thoughts, one sees that thoughts naturally dissolve like mist in the sky. Secretly, looking at the clear light of reality, one rests in equanimity in the natural state, without even the name of clinging to resting, and it is exhausted in the natural state of original purity. Again, without distraction, looking at the direct nature of secret awareness, one is naturally liberated from the views of conceptual thought. Therefore, the yogis of this view also see and liberate the meanings of other vehicles. As the root tantra says, "When the nature of the view is seen, conceptual thought is not moved by words." It also says, "The nature of reality is directly seen by the senses, that is what is called the view." The Lamp Illuminating says, "There are two kinds of views, the view of common characteristics and the view of the nature of reality. Those below Anu, because they cling to their own assertions, only look at common characteristics, and therefore cannot touch the meaning of the nature of reality. Some of those of Ati cannot even see a small part of this view. The sections on the Great Perfection Thigle, whether from the outer, inner, or secret aspects, cannot touch the meaning of this view. Therefore, the great secret instructions, the view itself is extremely secret. In the effortless view, one sees with the eye that cannot see." Also, the tantra says, "All outer, inner, and secret, are seen and realized in the essence itself." Also, the Wordless says, "Because there is no view, there is nothing to see. The view should be understood in the state of effortlessness. When the meaning of the non-dual view is realized in this way, there is naturally no view on the meaning of the view. It is neither existent nor non-existent, therefore one should abide in the state of clear light." Also, the Lion's Complete Power says, "The essence of the view of all Buddhas does not go beyond the two, the expanse and awareness."
