Then, the one who abides in the Dharma does not abide in the Pudgala (Tibetan, referring to an individual or person), the one who abides in the meaning does not abide in the words, the one who abides in the wisdom does not abide in the consciousness, and the one who abides in the definitive meaning does not abide in the guiding meaning. Among them, 'abiding in the Dharma' means that the Tathagata (Sanskrit, meaning 'the thus-gone one,' an epithet of the Buddha) is completely in Parinirvana (Sanskrit, referring to the final passing away). The Dharma of the Buddhas is the Dharmata (Sanskrit, the nature of reality) of all Dharmas. 'Dharmata' means that the Tathagata is permanent and unchanging. 'Not abiding in the Pudgala' refers to the Shravakas (Sanskrit, those who attain enlightenment by hearing the Buddha's teachings). Shravakas are impermanent phenomena arising from conditions. The Tathagata is permanent. 'Abiding in the meaning and not abiding in the words' means that the meaning is Abhisamaya (Sanskrit, direct realization). That is the Tathagata abiding permanently, unchangeable and immutable. 'Abiding in wisdom and not abiding in consciousness' means that wisdom is the Tathagata. If a Shravaka is not skilled in the qualities of the Tathagata, that is consciousness, and should not be abided in. If one recognizes the Tathagata as the Dharmakaya (Sanskrit, the body of Dharma), that is correct wisdom. 'Abiding in the definitive meaning and not abiding in the guiding meaning' means that if it is said that the Tathagata is impermanent, changing, and mutable, that is the guiding meaning. If it is said that the Tathagata is permanent, unchanging, and immutable, that is the definitive meaning. And so on, and as it is said in the Sutras (Sanskrit, general term for Buddhist scriptures): 'All is suffering, all is impermanent, all is painful, all is emptiness, all is without self.' This is called the guiding meaning. Why? Because not understanding these meanings causes many beings to fall into the Avici hell (Sanskrit, the most painful hell). This passage merely connects the meaning of the Ratnagotravibhāga (Sanskrit, a treatise on Buddha-nature) with words like 'permanent' and 'stable,' but does not actually abide in the meaning, which harms the view that one should not guide those to be tamed, so the wise should contemplate. Therefore, the intermediate teachings (referring to the second turning of the wheel of Dharma) do not distinguish the antidotes to grasping at reality, but uniformly show all Dharmas as without self-nature, without characteristics, without essence, emptiness, and without self. So the intermediate teachings are without characteristics and the wheel of Dharma that speaks of emptiness. The third turning of the wheel of Dharma is provisional (Sanskrit, requiring further interpretation to be understood) because it is spoken in relation to characteristics and antidotes. The final teachings (referring to the third turning of the wheel of Dharma) are the opposite of that, because they explain by distinguishing the three self-natures and so on according to reality. As the Five Hundred Prajñāpāramitā Sutra says: 'Whatever the Blessed One said about form being without self-nature, without arising or ceasing, primordially peaceful, and by nature in Nirvana...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who say, 'The literal meaning of the scriptures is the ultimate teaching, and there is no hidden meaning,' I say, are even worse than the heretics, because they rely on the views of ordinary people.' Similarly, in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* (Explication of the Thought Sutra), it says: 'The Tathāgata, considering the three natures, speaks of the sūtras in a veiled way, namely that all dharmas are unborn and unceasing, originally peaceful, and by nature in nirvāṇa.' If someone clings to the literal meaning of this kind of scripture, twenty-eight wrong views will arise, such as clinging to characteristics.' The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says: 'Even if someone believes in the true meaning of what I have said and is interested in the Dharma, but if he clings to the fact that all dharmas are literally without self-nature, unborn and unceasing, originally peaceful, and by nature in nirvāṇa, then he will fundamentally deny all dharmas, thinking that all dharmas are empty and without self-nature.' After denying all dharmas, he will slander the nature of all dharmas in various ways, slander the parikalpita-lakṣaṇa (imputed nature) of dharmas, and slander the paratantra-lakṣaṇa (dependent nature) and the pariniṣpanna-lakṣaṇa (perfected nature) of dharmas. In the *Mahāyāna Faith and Practice Sūtra*, it says: 'If a Bodhisattva analyzes the literal meaning of the scriptures in an incorrect way, twenty-eight incorrect views will arise, such as clinging to characteristics, slandering discrimination, slandering imputation, and so on.' In the *Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* (Diamond Sutra), it says: 'Venerable, some people are like bees, only knowing how to buzz and not knowing how to preach the Dharma. Bees only make a buzzing sound, and you, foolish like a bee, say nothing.' Such a person does not understand the hidden words of the Tathāgata and thinks that non-self is the Dharma, as foolish as a moth flying into a flame. 'Venerable Mañjuśrī, some people are like bees, only knowing how to buzz and not knowing the true meaning of emptiness and non-emptiness.' The naked heretics also think that everything is empty, and you, like a naked heretic bee, say nothing.' Although the Buddha rebukes Kāśyapa and Mañjuśrī in this way, the explicit teaching of the middle way is that all dharmas are without self-nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
