'Lord, how much merit will a son or daughter of good family accumulate if they hear this teaching, rejoice in it, strive to write it down, hold it, read it, make offerings to it, apply themselves to it properly, receive it, recite it, and engage with it through mindfulness and meditation?' The Blessed One replied, 'Excellent! Excellent! That son or daughter of good family will accumulate immeasurable, countless merit. Although it is not easy to illustrate with an example, I will tell you briefly. It is like this: if you compare the dust on the tip of a fingernail with all the dust on the earth, the former is not even close to one part in a hundred of the latter, let alone one part in a thousand, a hundred thousand, or any number, fraction, comparison, or measure. Similarly, if you compare the water in a cow's footprint with the water in the four great oceans, the former is not even close to one part in a hundred of the latter, and so on, up to any measure. In the same way, Lord of Truth, the merit I have spoken of that comes from having faith in the sutras that need to be interpreted, up to engaging with them through mindfulness and meditation, is not even close to one part in a hundred of the merit that comes from having faith in the teachings of definitive meaning, up to engaging with them through mindfulness and meditation and realizing them properly, and so on, up to any measure.' Thus, in the later turning of the wheel, the last surpasses the former in six ways: having and not having, having and not having the opportunity to be refuted by scripture and reason, provisional and definitive, being and not being a source of contention, not clearly revealing the way things are and clearly revealing it, and the difference between the merit of practicing the Dharma being like the dust on the tip of a fingernail and the dust on the earth. These six differences are spoken of in relation to the antidotes to the medium and subtle obscurations of affliction, and in relation to the dependence on the reality that is directly grasped by words, and having a special basis. The earlier lamas say that the three wheels mainly teach the three trainings of higher discipline, concentration, and wisdom in order, or the three of conduct, meditation, and view in order. The Uttaratantra states: 'Because generosity accomplishes enjoyments, discipline leads to higher realms, meditation eliminates afflictions, and wisdom eliminates all afflictions and objects of knowledge, therefore wisdom is the most supreme, and its cause is the former two.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus I have heard. 'Thus I have heard' refers to this final teaching. If the beings to be tamed in the intermediate period are purely Mahāyāna, but the beings to be tamed in the final period are not so, but are various, such as non-Buddhists, ordinary beings, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, then the intermediate period is superior, because the intermediate period is for those who have entered the Mahāyāna, and the final period is for those who have various natures or have entered all vehicles. If one asks this, the meaning of that Sūtra is that the beings to be tamed in the intermediate period are like laypeople without monastic vows, and the beings to be tamed in the third period are like Mahāyāna monks who have entered all the lower vehicles. For example, in the Kālacakra, it says: 'Among the three, the monk is supreme, the intermediate is said to be a novice, and the householder is the lowest.' This is in accordance with the first explanation of the three kinds of Vajra masters, superior, intermediate, and inferior. Entering only one's own vehicle contradicts entering all vehicles, because one has not entered other vehicles. The beings to be tamed by the final teaching are only extremely pure, as it says in the Drum Sound Sūtra: 'Light Protector, purify the assembly, and then teach the Drum Sound Sūtra.' Then, all the non-Buddhists, Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and new entrants to the vehicle were expelled. Then, Light Protector requested, 'Because the assembly has become pure in nature, please speak.' In the Finger Garland Sūtra, it says: 'The Sugata-garbha is taught only to the Bodhisattva tigers, and not to others.' If in the Samādhirāja Sūtra it says: 'Whatever emptiness is taught by the Sugatas, understanding the distinctions of the definitive meaning Sūtras, whatever beings, persons, or individuals are taught, all those teachings should be understood as provisional meaning.' Does it not mean that the intermediate teaching is of definitive meaning and the final teaching is of provisional meaning? In the Twenty Verses, it says: 'Because of the beings to be tamed who have form, etc., according to the minds of those beings to be tamed, it is spoken thus for the sake of taming.' Therefore, in reality, showing that form, etc., exist, in relation to the first teaching, the intermediate teaching that shows everything to be empty is of definitive meaning. However, in relation to the intermediate teaching, showing that the natural Dharma does not exist in reality, showing that the Dharma-possessors do not exist in reality, and showing that the Dharma-nature exists in reality, is permanent and stable, etc., the final teaching is of definitive meaning. In the Great Drum Sound Sūtra, it says: 'All the Sūtras that teach emptiness should be known as provisional, and this kind of unsurpassed Sūtra should be known as non-provisional.' In the sixth fascicle of the Great Nirvāṇa Sūtra, three-quarters of the way through, it says: 'Monks, I abide in the four Dharmas.' What are the four? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
