This is reasonable in the Ratnagotravibhāga. In the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, the Buddhas explain the meaning of terms such as emptiness as the Tathāgatagarbha, thus proving that sentient beings possess the Dharmakāya. If that sūtra had no object to be expressed, then saying 'the emptiness to be expressed' etc., would be like someone who does not understand the situation speaking arbitrarily, and would mislead those to be trained. Ultimate emptiness etc. are actually the Tathāgatagarbha itself. Expressing it in the manner of emptiness, what is the Tathāgatagarbha? As quoted earlier from the Madhyāntavibhāga, the Bodhicittavivaraṇa, the hundred names of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, etc., the names of the Tathāgatagarbha are listed as emptiness, Suchness, Nirvāṇa, Dharmakāya, and ultimate truth. In the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, using the example of a potter making various vessels from clay, it is explained that the Tathāgatas also skillfully reveal the Tathāgatagarbha by counteracting all inversions such as selflessness and conceptualization. Or, by revealing selflessness, just as a potter, they explain it with various words and letters. If you say, 'If it is selflessness, then it contradicts your assertion of self and permanence,' there is no fault, because on the basis of the absence of two selves, we establish the supreme self and the Tathāgata self. If the basis of the absence of two selves is merely negation, then it would lead to nihilism. In the Sūtrālaṃkāra it says: 'Having obtained the supreme self of selflessness, therefore having obtained the pure self of the Buddha, one becomes the self of the great self.' In the Tilaka of Mahāmudrā it says: 'The self pervades all things, it truly exists. If there is no self, all beings are like trees with their roots cut off.' In the Jñānatilaka it says: 'The self that is not other, even the Buddhas find it difficult to find. Without you, the three realms are like a person with their head cut off.' As quoted earlier: 'I pervade all this, I do not see any other nature of beings.' And 'I am the Tathāgatagarbha' etc., these are contradictory, therefore it is both the absence of self of persons and phenomena, and it is something that has the supreme self. If the meaning of the essence does not actually exist, then one would commit the fault mentioned above, that if the Tathāgatagarbha does not exist, it would be too extreme. Again, based on the thought of Maitreya, the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meaning Collection: 'What is the consciousness of ordinary beings?' It means that the nature is inherently pure. Therefore, it is called Buddha. The introspective part of Kunzhi Alaya consciousness is merely self-knowing and self-illuminating. When it is impure, it is called the realm of sentient beings; when it changes from impure to pure, it is called Bodhisattva; when it is completely pure, it is called Tathagata. The nature of mind is luminosity, which also refers to this. Therefore, the transformation of the eight consciousnesses into the four wisdoms does not mean that the essence becomes better, nor does it mean that the essence undergoes a transformation. In the 'Distinction of Dharma Nature,' it says: 'Therefore, becoming its nature, approaching it is Suchness. When it becomes stainless, everything is just Suchness. Manifestation is also a transformation, this is accomplishment.' This contradicts the exhaustion transformation where the eight consciousnesses and all defilements are exhausted. If it is thought that the essence undergoes a transformation, then because the continuum of obscurations does not cease, the Buddha will not attain complete transformation. For followers of Maitreya's teachings, there is no need to seek the view of the Tathagatagarbha separately, because 'the ultimate truth of the self-born' means that the Tathagatagarbha is the ultimate truth. The Meaning Collection text 'What is the consciousness of ordinary beings?' etc., means that Kunzhi Alaya consciousness is not that of ordinary beings, but rather the Dharma nature consciousness of ordinary beings, which is shown to be the Buddha of self-nature purity and the basis of self-nature. Kunzhi Alaya consciousness is neutral, its nature is not luminous, like darkness, it is conceptual thought and should be abandoned. While the Dharma nature mind, the Tathagatagarbha, is self-luminous, like light, it is luminous and non-conceptual, and should be accepted. The 'Ornament of the Sutras' says: 'Other minds besides the Dharma nature mind are not luminous, referring to the self-nature.' In the commentary, it says: 'The non-conceptual mind besides the Dharma nature mind, which is the nature of other-powered, does not refer to self-nature luminosity.' Non-conceptual thought is the true wisdom of Suchness. Therefore, the Dharma nature mind is Suchness. The 'Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes' says: 'False conceptualization is not real, mind and mental factors are the three realms.' It also says: 'One is the consciousness of conditions, the second is the near-acting one. Near-acting and universal-acting, and its function are mental factors.' In the previous commentary, it says: 'Now it shows the characteristics of the divisions of the activity of that very unreal conceptualization.' And the characteristics of the activity…… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
