Pervasive things also cannot become one because they are related to many directions. The same reasoning applies to all those who assert unconditioned dharmas as real. If you do not assert unconditioned dharmas as knowable objects, then by that very fact their selflessness is established. If you assert them as knowable objects, then because they are related to sequential consciousness, they become momentary like consciousness, and therefore cannot be established as unconditioned. It is said that: Whatever is analyzed, for that there is no oneness. For whatever there is no oneness, for that there is also no multiplicity. In this way, because of being separated from one and many, all phenomena are selfless, which is established by analyzing only the aggregates of form. Furthermore, if we analyze the nature of the other four aggregates, such as feeling, they are also selfless because they are separated from one and many. Just because feeling is of three kinds—pleasant, painful, and neutral—it cannot become one. Moreover, each of these is divided into eighteen kinds, six each in terms of support and object. Conception is also divided into small, large, and immeasurable, which are three in terms of realms. In terms of support and object, there are six. Each of these is also without distinction in terms of grasping at characteristics. There are forty-nine mental formations that are associated with mind, and fourteen or twenty-three non-associated mental formations, and so on. Consciousness also cannot become one because it exists as eight or six aggregates. Moreover, each of these also arises by focusing on various objects in various ways, and therefore cannot become one. If we analyze from the perspective of time, then in the three times—past, future, and present—the states of feeling and so on are different. Moreover, each of these is different from moment to moment, from year to month, and there is no oneness that can be established except for nominal designation. If you think that a moment can become one, then: How can a moment have an end? Likewise, the beginning and middle should be examined. Thus, because a moment has three parts, the world does not abide in a moment. If the beginning, middle, and end are considered like a moment, then the beginning, middle, and end cannot be established as one. Therefore, because multiplicity also cannot be established, the nature of one and many is not observed, and therefore it is selfless.

Therefore, he fulfilled the previous commitment, that the objects of refutation by those reasonings are the aggregates, etc. Putowa sometimes also said that these three reasonings are dependent origination, Vajra Splinter, and one and many. Geshe Tonpa's guru, Jowo Wangchuk Shönnu, from Arya Deva's Madhyamaka Catuhsataka, said: 'To a rope, one apprehends a snake; seeing the rope, it is meaningless. If one sees its parts, then also to that, like a snake, knowing is delusion.' It is said that he applied this to any object, and through the reasoning of one and many, even those who do not know the alphabet could understand emptiness well. In tents, he invited the opening and la of meritorious activities. At the time of offering, he asked: 'Isn't your tent said to be a collection of many hopes? If the hopes are separated one by one, will the tent still be established?' After thinking for a moment, they understood and admitted it. He then asked: 'Isn't hope said to be a collection of many threads? If the threads are separated one by one, will hope still be established?' He then asked: 'Isn't thread said to be a collection of strands of wool? If the strands are separated one by one, will thread still be established?' He also divided the wool into the head, tail, middle, etc., and asked questions. After thinking for a moment, they understood and admitted it. He then applied the saying: 'To hope, one apprehends a tent; seeing hope, it is meaningless. If one sees its parts, then also to that, like a tent, knowing is delusion.' In houses, he invited the opening and la of meritorious activities. At the time of offering, he asked: 'Isn't your house said to be a collection of many stones and wood? If the stones and wood are separated one by one, will the house still be established?' Finally, he even divided the dust into its parts and asked questions. After they admitted it, he said: 'To stones and wood, one apprehends a house; seeing stones and wood, it is meaningless. If one sees its parts, then also to that, like a house, knowing is delusion.' It is said that he did so. Thus, he only briefly explained the way to establish the selflessness of phenomena through the three reasonings. Second, regarding the way in which it is extensively explained in those great Madhyamaka treatises and briefly presented here: Through the reasoning of the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness and the Root Verses on the Middle Way, etc., the emptiness of the nature of phenomena is established and explained.
