Just as a thick darkness can arise even from a flame. Furthermore, if something arises from something else, does it arise from the permanent or the impermanent? If it is said to arise from the permanent, that is not correct. Because the permanent cause has unimpeded power, all effects should arise simultaneously. But because the effects are perceived in a sequential order, if one wonders how a permanent cause can sequentially produce effects, it is also unreasonable for a permanent cause to produce effects sequentially. If that were the case, just as there is sequence in the effects, there must also be sequence in the cause, thereby undermining its permanence. If it is said to arise from the impermanent, from which does it arise: the past, the future, or the present? If it is thought to arise from the past, the past is something that has ceased, decayed, and separated, so it is non-existent. And the non-existent is devoid of all power, so it cannot serve as a cause. Nor is it from the future, because the future has not yet formed or attained its own nature, so it is non-existent. Therefore, it also cannot serve as a cause. If it is thought to arise from the present, because that is simultaneous, there is no mutual dependence, so simultaneous things cannot be cause and effect, therefore it does not arise from another. If we consider the case where the effect, the six aggregates of consciousness, arises from the four conditions, from the perspective of the causal condition, arising from the preceding consciousness, it arises from itself. From the perspective of the objective condition, arising from form and the other three remaining conditions, it arises from another. Also, when a sprout arises from seeds, fields, water, fertilizer, and human effort, from the perspective of arising from the seed, it arises from itself. From the perspective of arising from other conditions, it arises from another. Similarly, if we consider the arising of sentient beings, from the perspective of arising from the seed of consciousness, it arises from itself. From the perspective of arising from the union of parents, it is from another. Likewise, it is the same for everything. If it is said to arise from both, because cause and effect are different in time, earlier and later, the causal conditions and so forth cannot be established as self, therefore arising from both cannot be established. Moreover, self and other abide in contradictory dharmas, therefore being both is also unreasonable. Furthermore, if one believes that it arises from self or other, the faults of the aforementioned two positions will also similarly occur. Therefore, the reality of the aggregates and so on

Therefore, things are not born from either themselves or others. Furthermore, those who argue for causelessness ask: What causes the lotus stem, pistil, petals, and so on? Similarly, what causes the patterns on peacock feathers and so on? Therefore, if they think that all these things and so on arise from no cause, then that itself proves that they have causes. If they arose without cause, they would be undifferentiated, so cows and wool, etc., would also have the qualities of lotuses, and crows would also have the qualities of peacocks. But this is not the case. Furthermore, as it says, "Because causelessness does not rely on others, it would always exist or not exist." It would be reasonable for it to be like that, but it is not. Because things appear to arise in some places at some times, they are proven to depend on causes in conventional truth, so they are not born from no cause either. Therefore, the aggregates and other things do not arise in ultimate truth. And in conventional truth, the appearance of effects arising from causes and conditions is just a relative relationship, like shortness relative to length, light relative to a lamp, or this shore relative to the other shore, so it is only conventional truth, not a substantial existence. Because it is not reasonable for self-nature to arise from causes and conditions. If it arises from causes and conditions, then self-nature would become something made. How can self-nature be called something made? As the scriptures say, because of this reasoning, self-nature cannot be changed by causes, so the aggregates and other things are emptiness, which is inherently without self-nature from the very beginning. On this, Sharawa said: "Just as a diamond can destroy all things, this reasoning can also destroy the clinging to things, so it is called a diamond. Because it is subtle and difficult to understand, it is called a diamond splinter." The second reasoning, analyzing both cause and effect by separating one and many: Or, all phenomena, if analyzed by one and many, because self-nature cannot be found, it can be determined that they are without self-nature. As the scriptures say, or, for all the phenomena of both cause and effect of the aggregates and so on, analyze with the reasoning of analyzing by one and many, other than the above two reasonings.
