Those sentient beings with steadfast minds and unique qualities, The countless Bodhisattvas, all three, Are said to constantly strive. In this way, their Dharma assembly is the path itself. The term "Arya" also means "gone far," meaning that from the very first arising of the mind, they have gone far beyond all worldly beings, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas. It is not that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are not regarded as objects of refuge because their blessings are small or inferior, but because their paths do not align. For example, when going to Bodh Gaya, a companion who is only going as far as Stodlung is of no help. Even if one initially sets out for India, one cannot reach the destination if one changes one's mind along the way, hence the term "non-returning." Thus, to accomplish omniscience for the sake of others, it is impossible without relying on the blessings of the Three Jewels. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on them. Geshe Tonpa said: "No matter how much effort one makes in this life, if there is no arising of those [blessings], one will not attain Buddhahood no matter how long one practices. One attains Buddhahood by relying on the increase of maturation and cause-similarity. Even that is not enough; one attains Buddhahood by relying on the blessings of the mind of enlightenment, whereby even small roots of virtue become vast. Even that is not enough; one attains Buddhahood only by relying on the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas." It is said that when the venerable Dromtön Gyaltsab placed his right palm on the crown of Arya Norsang's head, Norsang had the vision of going before all the Buddhas of the ten directions. Before some Buddhas, he merely folded his palms; before others, he merely received instructions; before others, he merely practiced pure conduct; and before others, he practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva for as many kalpas as there are dust particles in a field. When Dromtön raised his hand, Norsang was sitting before him with his palms folded. When this was asked of Potowa, he replied that it was the completion of the accumulation of merit, no different from actually performing those actions. Therefore, the former is the definitive meaning. Furthermore, it is impossible to achieve without relying on the teacher Buddha, the actual path Dharma, and the virtuous Sangha who are companions in practicing the path. Therefore, relying on them for that purpose is called "special refuge," meaning that having recognized them as objects of refuge and having gained faith, this is the first ground.

Even so, it is most important to have faith in the objects of refuge before all else. Therefore, from a young age, one should cultivate the greatness of the Three Jewels of Refuge. During this time, the lama constantly exhorted, thereby generating a faith that seemed to see them directly. Even when kneeling or squatting, one should adopt a respectful posture, joining the palms of the hands, and recite the refuge three times. Before taking refuge in this way, one should also manifest love and compassion for all sentient beings. One should also manifest the greatness of the Three Jewels. One should regard the virtuous friend as a Buddha. One should also remember that one's own aggregates, which are taken as a continuum, are like dreams and illusions, and that names are arbitrarily assigned to them. The lama would question and have the disciples meditate, and also allow them to rest in between. He bestowed these instructions and had them meditate. It is said that only Geshe Tonpa possessed all these complete practices. Yogis and monks initially did not have all these practices, but later the Geshes bestowed their kindness. The people of Sangpu were generally covered by the kindness of Atisha. It is said that Potowa went to consecrate the stupa of Geshe Tonpa, and some people said they were going to generate bodhicitta, and went to see it with great joy, but it is said that they only saw something like receiving the upasatha vows. Therefore, whoever one has taken refuge in, one must keep his teachings. For example, whichever king one has taken refuge in, one must accomplish his work and keep his laws. If one does not do so, not only will one not receive his benefits, but one will also be in danger of being punished for violating them. Or, if one keeps the laws of the king one relies on, one is counted as the king's person; if one does not keep the laws, one is not counted as the king's person. Similarly, if one who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels does not keep their teachings, one will incur faults that contradict them, or one will not be counted as a Buddhist, so one must learn their teachings. Sharawa Chenpo said: The uncommon teachings are like those spoken from the Compendium of Perfections, which seems to apply only to the meditation on the essence of aspirational bodhicitta. The common teachings have their respective teachings.
