If you think that you are also unable to do anything and sadness arises, then meditate that other sentient beings also do not have a real existence as individuals. Then, if you think that even if you achieve a real existence of a dharma, you will not be able to eliminate the suffering of real existence, then meditate that neither you nor all sentient beings have a self of dharma. Meditating on these two in sequence is like conveying the news of the queen's death to the king. The king, because he was attached to the queen who possessed perfect wealth, was unavoidably together with her. Later, due to a special need, the king went to war in another country, and the queen died. If the king were told from the beginning, he would vomit blood and die, and such sadness would arise. A minister skilled in strategy sent a messenger to ask the king if he was well. The messenger said that everything else was fine, but a large boil had appeared on the queen's forehead. Then he sent a second, third, and fourth messenger, and when they asked as before, they learned that the boil had turned into a pustule, the pustule had spread and covered the face, and the queen's face had ulcerated, leaving only bones. After repeatedly conveying this, the king's mind began to change, and he thought that it would be good if the queen had already died. At this time, he was told that the queen had passed away, and the king was very happy and did not feel sad. Similarly, when sadness arises because of one's own and others' suffering, if it is shown that there is no self of suffering, one will become very happy. At this time, the two kinds of selflessness are shown. Shantideva said: 'Likewise, both myself and others, fear suffering and do not want it, what difference is there between self and others, why protect oneself and not others?' and 'Having become accustomed to the equality of self and others, the mind of enlightenment will arise.' This is the instruction for practicing the mind of enlightenment. If a beginner practices like that, the mind of enlightenment will not be stable. It is necessary to practice as Atisha said. Second, because method and wisdom are separated and bind, it is shown that neither should be abandoned: 'Wisdom without method, and method without wisdom, by what are they said to be bound, therefore neither of these should be abandoned.' It is said like that. This is also as shown before,

If skillful means and wisdom are combined, and skillful means are also combined with wisdom, if this is not the case, then what is the fault of separating these two? If one cultivates wisdom that is separated from skillful means such as the three levels of individuals, merely emptiness, then one will be bound to the extreme of peace; if one becomes accustomed to skillful means that are separated from cultivating the emptiness of selflessness of phenomena, then one will also be bound to the extreme of existence. For what reason? In the Sutra of Vimalakirti, it is said: 'Wisdom separated from skillful means binds one to the Hearers, and skillful means separated from wisdom binds one to samsara.' Therefore, those who seek nirvana and Buddhahood without dwelling on these two extremes should not abandon both skillful means and wisdom. They should cultivate skillful means combined with wisdom, and wisdom combined with skillful means. That is to say, when skillful means become stable, then it is also cultivation to show it through the wisdom that knows the two selflessnesses. First, like a person's feet, one relies on skillful means to cultivate wisdom, and relies on wisdom to cultivate skillful means, alternating them. Having become accustomed to this, when one enters the realm, one cultivates them simultaneously like a bird's wings. Even when one is accustomed to the various skillful means, one does not cling to the substance of the three circles; even when one is accustomed to the wisdom of emptiness, one does not abandon compassion; and one cultivates those objects that are the object of skillful means without any object of focus, in both the meditative equipoise and the subsequent attainment. This is what Sharawa said. Third, showing the difference between skillful means and wisdom: To dispel the doubts of 'What is wisdom and what is skillful means?' I will clearly explain the true difference between skillful means and wisdom. All virtuous dharmas, such as the Perfection of Giving, abandoning the Perfection of Wisdom, are taught by the Buddhas as skillful means. That is to say, from the sutras and treatises, some places where the words skillful means and wisdom are combined are mentioned. If one doubts what the wisdom of this treatise is and what the skillful means are, in order to dispel these doubts, I will clearly explain the true difference between what the skillful means of this treatise are and what the wisdom is. So, what is it? The Perfection of Wisdom
