Of the five explanations, the first concerns the connection between the training in higher mind and wisdom: Separation from the union with the Perfection of Wisdom will not exhaust the obscurations. Therefore, in order to abandon all afflictions and cognitive obscurations, one should always cultivate the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom with skillful means. So it is said. That is to say, as just explained, even if one trains in higher discipline and higher mind, if one is separated from the practice of cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom, one will not abandon the clinging to reality, and therefore the root obscurations will not be exhausted. If the two obscurations are not exhausted, one is still a samsaric being. Therefore, due to ignorance of the Four Noble Truths, the arising of attachment and aversion is the obscuration of affliction, and the conceptualization based on clinging to reality is called the cognitive obscuration. In order to abandon these two completely, one should rely on calm abiding and view the selflessness of persons and phenomena, and cultivate the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom. Without calm abiding, it is like placing a lamp in the wind; wisdom will not clearly understand the meaning of selflessness. And when cultivating wisdom in this way, one should not be separated from skillful means, but should always cultivate it with the stages of the three types of individuals and the skillful means of the five perfections. This is the teaching of Sharawa: The previous two trainings only suppressed and subdued the afflictions, but without the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom, one has not abandoned the root of all afflictions, which is the view of self. The forest fire of meditation, even if repeatedly, burns the forest of faults, if the root of self-view is not uprooted, like being moistened by rain, it will grow vigorously in the future. So it is said. Just as fire burns the branches and leaves of a forest, but if the roots are not pulled out, when moistened by rain and the like, the ashes become fertilizer and it grows back even better, so if one does not abandon the view of self, even if one attains meditation and the formless realms, suppressing the afflictions, the afflictions will later arise strongly again according to circumstances. Even if one only cultivates the selflessness of persons, if one does not abandon the clinging to the truth of the aggregates and so on, then, as long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be clinging to self in them. As long as there is clinging to self, there will be karma.

E! As it is said, even the view of self cannot be abandoned. For example, mistaking a post for a person, when you go near it, you know it is a post, but if you don't knock it down, you will still mistake it when you go far away. Even if you are allowed to abandon the view of self, you cannot abandon all obscurations without meditating on the selflessness of phenomena, which is the antidote to the obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, in order to abandon all obscurations, you should meditate on it. According to the view of Master Nagarjuna, even the Hearers realize the selflessness of phenomena, but they do not realize the selflessness of all phenomena, only the selflessness of phenomena related to their own basis. Moreover, because they lack the great means, they believe that they cannot abandon the obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, meditating on the yoga of the Mother is not just wisdom, but meditating with means. Moreover, it is not just meditating with means once, but always meditating with means. As it is said in this very text, meditating on actions, causes, and results, using the four non-behaviors, is a means of bringing the mind to the point where it does not deviate from the Dharma. Meditating on all existence as the nature of suffering, so that one does not desire the three realms even in dreams, and striving to abandon its cause by practicing the three trainings more quickly than putting out a fire on one's head or clothes, is a means. Knowing all sentient beings in the three realms as one's parents, and feeling great compassion based on one's own experience of the various sufferings they endure in existence, and vowing to attain omniscience in order to protect them, and training in the five precepts, is a means. In order to diligently engage in the cause of attaining the result, one must train well in the three trainings of morality, which become conducive to calm abiding, and based on that, accomplish calm abiding. Based on that, one must meditate on higher insight wisdom. Before all of that, the most important thing is to seek refuge from impermanence and fear by meditating on the recollection of death, to know that the Three Jewels are the refuge, and to go for refuge to them, which is the only important method for attaining Buddhahood. Furthermore, from the Entrance to the Middle Way, if there is no generosity, one will have to look to others for sustenance, and emptiness will be interrupted. If there is no morality, one will go to the lower realms.
