Is it not the case that if one attains the actual state by focusing on the very nature (of emptiness), then the stages are not necessary? Generally, even if one attains only the five superknowledges, they are subject to decline, so one needs the superknowledge of the exhaustion of defilements. For that, one needs the wisdom of insight. For that, one must also attain calm abiding. As the Buddha said, "When samadhi is perfectly attained, the wise will know." It is like, "A person whose mind is distracted dwells in the jaws of afflictions." With a distracted mind, pure morality will not come about, and the mind of enlightenment will not be firmly established. Therefore, for these, one needs calm abiding that can subdue afflictions. The sign of having attained calm abiding is that even if one meditates with the crown of one's head resting on the tip of a thorn, one can remain as long as one wishes. Because the mind is workable, one can remain on any object of focus as long as one wishes. Now, it seems that people are saying they have attained calm abiding without any of these signs. Geshe Tonpa said, "If it is pride in superknowledge, that's okay, but otherwise, abandon the vows of individual liberation." Once, Drom Geshe said to a young monk, "In this assembly, you alone are young, so endure until you are about eighty years old. Formerly, an old lay practitioner of Drom said, 'If someone says they have attained calm abiding, but afflictions arise in their mindstream, know that they are possessed by a demon. If someone says they have seen a deity, but afflictions arise in their mindstream, know that they are possessed by a demon.' Tell them this and repeat my words." I don't know if he repeated them or not. Khampa Lungpa lived to be over ninety years old and repeated these words. If the mind truly abides, even if one has not attained the actual state, one can still subdue afflictions, and understanding of knowable things becomes easier. Attachment to all desires also becomes smaller. Now, afflictions are becoming stronger, and attachment to all desires is becoming greater, yet people claim to be meditating, but they will not reach their desired destination. Third, explaining the training in higher wisdom. The relationship between the training in higher mind and higher wisdom. Because skillful means and wisdom are mutually bound, it is shown that neither should be abandoned. The difference between skillful means and wisdom. The order of meditating on these two. The training in wisdom itself.
