Or it is good to meditate on the five methods such as meditating on ugliness to counteract attachment. Just as the son of the noble Maudgalyayana taught two disciples one object of focus, but they did not give birth (to realization), while Shariputra, who was the best of wisdom, changed that object of focus and immediately generated samadhi, so one object of focus is not necessarily suitable for everyone. Just as one medicine is not necessarily able to cure all diseases. It is not suitable to cultivate loving-kindness for those with strong attachment, and to cultivate ugliness for those with strong hatred. Counting breaths is also not suitable for those with great ignorance. Only selflessness and the two graspers are said to be the most supreme object of focus without characteristics, but if taught when the time is not ripe, two faults will be committed, as stated in the Garland of Jewels and the Introduction to the Middle Way. Dependent origination is suitable for everyone. In the Stages of Meditation, it is also said that one can focus on the Dharma of the twelve divisions of scripture, or on the five aggregates, etc., or on the image of the Buddha, and all of these are not inverted. When teaching instructions to others, one cannot just talk about it, it must be something that will be learned in the future, personally experienced, and passed down one after another, which has the meaning of realization. Saying that one has attained samadhi, meditating with a stone in hand, or entrusting consciousness to a wooden board for meditation, etc., many similar methods have been mentioned before. But that level of satisfaction is not the basis for us to determine now, so those should not be regarded as previous methods. There are also some people who say that everything is emptiness, thereby abandoning skillful means. Saying that there is no conceptualization, thereby cutting off all conceptualization, this is also not possible. Geshe Putowa Stengka had a similar experience of meditating to the point of not knowing day and night because the wind channels entered his eyes, but none of those achieved the slightest satisfaction. Just as it is said, "Abandoning the five faults, relying on the eight antidotes, if there is a little, it will naturally appear." No matter what object of focus one focuses on, as long as one places the mind on virtue, it is also like "Abandoning the five faults, relying on the eight antidotes, arising from the cause of reliance," abiding in the manner of relying on the eight antidotes to abandon the five faults. Among them, the five faults are: laziness, forgetting the instructions, sinking, agitation, non-application, and

to do. The first of these is both lethargy and weak application. If these two are present, one will not enter into the practice of samadhi. Even if one enters, if one forgets the key instructions, one will be caught in the swing of doubt and will not become single-pointed on the object of focus. Even if one achieves that state once, if one is separated from mindfulness and awareness and falls into sinking and excitement, one will regress from the previous state. When sinking and excitement arise, if one does not make an effort to counteract them, one will not abandon sinking and excitement. Without these, when dwelling calmly on the object of focus, one searches and then loses the object of focus again and becomes distracted. In the Madhyāntavibhāga, it says, "Lethargy and the key instructions, forgetting, sinking, and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults." It says. The eight applications to abandon these are also mentioned there: "The place and dwelling in it, the cause and the result as well, not forgetting the object of focus, realizing sinking and excitement, the manifest application to abandon them, and abiding calmly when pacified." It says. And in the commentary, it says, "The place of effort is desire, dwelling is effort, the cause of dwelling desire is faith, that is, because if one is convinced, one will manifest desire. The result of dwelling effort is extreme pliancy, because by initiating diligence, one obtains the excellence of samadhi." It says. The meaning is that initially there is no samadhi, because the mind is distracted and has those faults mentioned earlier. If there is samadhi, one is convinced that those previous benefits will arise. Relying on the faith of believing that the practice of samadhi depends on the key instructions that truly show the object of focus, the desire to obtain it arises. If one has that, one initiates diligence for the sake of obtaining samadhi. After initiating diligence, one obtains a small stage of pliancy of body and mind, and these four become the antidote to lethargy. With the mindfulness that does not forget the key instructions that show the object of focus of samadhi, one abandons forgetting. With awareness, one observes whether one has fallen into sinking or excitement, or whether one is not falling into these two and is holding the object of focus well. If one falls into sinking and excitement, one will realize it. If one falls into these, one remembers the antidote to sinking and the obstructing objects, the six recollections, etc.
