So, what is the cause of generating clairvoyance? If one has not attained realization, there will be no clairvoyance. Because if one has not accomplished the actual basis of calm abiding and contemplation, the great fruit of clairvoyance will not be achieved. Therefore, the cause of clairvoyance is the accomplishment of the actual basis of calm abiding and contemplation. Because one desires to obtain the great fruit of clairvoyance, in order to accomplish calm abiding, which is the actual basis of contemplation as the cause, before obtaining calm abiding, just like rubbing wood to obtain fire, one should constantly and diligently practice. Like this, one should strive again and again. That is to say, it requires a respectful, long-term, and uninterrupted practice. Sharawa said: To practice calm abiding, one also needs to focus on the object of meditation without interruption. It won't work like an old horse chewing grass. When Putowa went to the monastery, he also spoke about the pretentiousness of yogis. It is the same now, being distracted by various evil deeds, only occasionally running to the object of meditation, without abiding, this will not work. We only slightly do not forget mindfulness, and when meditating, we think that we are firmly focused on the object of meditation, but as soon as we stand up, we ask: Have you fed the calf? Has the field been plowed? Have you given grass to the horse? This will also not work. Therefore, one needs to not be interrupted by any worldly evil deeds, and even during rest, one needs to continue the practice of meditation. He said that other than that, merely the clairvoyance of remembering past lives can also be achieved through generosity, just as it is said in the Jataka tale of warm rice porridge mentioned earlier: Through the generosity of Dharma, one remembers past lives, young man, you should understand it this way. Also, in the Sutra Requested by King Srimala, it is said: Offering lamps obtains the divine eye, and offering music and cymbals obtains the divine ear. Keeping the precepts can also achieve it. It is said that all the gods, as soon as they are born, can directly see the three places of where they were born from, what karma they were born from, and where they were born, which is the result of keeping the precepts. Reciting the Bhadracarya Pranidhana also has the story of remembering past lives. A person from U (Central Tibet) went to Bengal in the east and saw a thirteen-year-old child who could speak the U dialect. After talking to him, he said that he was in Drime in U.

When someone passed away, they asked, "Where does a monk like this reside?" After he died, that person cried and asked, "What was he to you?" He replied, "He was my Khenpo in a previous life. I have parents here, and for their sake, I still want to go to U-Tsang (present-day Lhasa and surrounding areas) to become a monk." They asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "North of Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya), there is a hut like this; I am the monk Sonam who lives there." They asked, "Then, what is the cause for remembering past lives?" He replied, "Reciting the 'Bhadrakalpika Sutra' (Good Aeon Sutra) allows one to remember past lives." Such statements also exist. It is said that when Jowo (Atisha) came to Tibet, he was about thirty years old. It is also said that reciting the 'Six Gate Dharani' and others also helps in remembering past lives. We ourselves can also accomplish these, so we should strive. In general, remembering past lives helps in completing accumulations, and it also requires generating disillusionment with samsara, as well as being assisted by pure discipline and the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). If these are lacking, even in hell, among pretas, and in the heavens, there are those who remember past lives, but that does not become a cause for completing accumulations. It is said that the abbot of Vikramashila, after being reborn as a preta, said, "I have only gained firm conviction in cause and effect; in the past, I have harmed others ten times, but our preta minds have no autonomy." It is also said that having been born in those realms, even if one knows the faults, one cannot turn away from sin. Third, explaining how to strive in this. Those who wish to cultivate calm abiding (shamatha) must abide in its accumulations and limbs, and explaining the object of focus for cultivating calm abiding. First: Because the limbs of calm abiding are completely deficient, even if one strives diligently in meditation, even after thousands of years, samadhi will not be accomplished. Therefore, one should abide well in the limbs spoken of in the chapter on the accumulations of samadhi. That is to say, to cultivate calm abiding, one must abide in its accumulations and limbs; if the accumulations and limbs of calm abiding are completely deficient, that is, not possessed, then even if one strives diligently in meditating on the object of focus for cultivating calm abiding in the manner previously described, even after thousands of years, the samadhi of calm abiding will not be accomplished. Therefore, those who wish to cultivate calm abiding must first abide in what is spoken of in the chapter on the accumulations of samadhi.
