It is not that one has already become those from the beginning. We, too, have become like that through gradual habituation, so I also think that if I get used to it, there is nothing I cannot do. I meditate like that. Now, the actions of the Bodhisattvas who are dwelling on the earth, all like an arrow shot and returned to the target, will not even give rise to the slightest hesitation. In order to accomplish omniscience for the sake of others, one must abandon all the desires of this life, and not look at any of the happiness or suffering of this life. If one demands that, one will come back discouraged. At such times of discouragement, one should also think about what will happen to this life if one abandons the Dharma. If one does not make effort oneself, the afflictions will not look at compassion either. Giving and so on will not say, 'Because you cannot accomplish it, we will complete it.' The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not protect you either. If they did, the Lord Avalokiteshvara alone would have already placed all beings in liberation by now. Those who are not liberated are those who are not protected. If you make effort yourself first, you will be liberated first; if you make effort later, you will be liberated later. Looking at others, too, abandoning the Dharma, you will not see any happiness even in this life. If you act according to the Dharma, you will see that it becomes easier and easier. Think about how much happiness you have enjoyed in previous lives, and you have been deceived. You have taken on so much suffering, and there is no result. Now, the suffering of practicing the Dharma does not have even a tiny fraction of the suffering of the lower realms, and it has great results, making all suffering come to an end. The happiness of abandoning the Dharma is not better than the previous happiness. If you abandon the Dharma here, you will have to experience endless suffering in future lives, so think about that and do not mistreat yourself. Now, because you have not properly measured the Dharma, you are going to mistreat yourself. If you measure it properly, you will be discouraged, and the fault of mistreating yourself is great. If you mistreat yourself, you will not even achieve a good rebirth, and you will only go lower and lower. The seventh is patience and diligence. Patience: It is necessary to endure both suffering and harm. If you cannot endure suffering, you will not be able to start any Dharma practice, just as Geshe Tonpa said, using alcohol as an example. Without enduring harm,

If one retaliates with evil, one will not become a virtuous person who refrains from harming others, root and branch. Therefore, one should cultivate patience in various ways. Because "even a sin committed in a moment can cause one to be reborn in the Avici hell for an eon," merely contemplating the results of karma is also beneficial for cultivating patience. After contemplating in this way, one should, like, "I would rather be burned or killed, I would rather have my head cut off, I will never submit to the enemy of afflictions," not be weary of the Dharma and have endurance. Therefore, one who desires merit and lives in the forest should not examine the faults of others. One should not generate thoughts such as "I am particularly superior, I am the best." As it is said, not inflicting wounds on others who do evil and act contrary to the Dharma is to possess the six qualities of Dharma. Because if one inflicts wounds on others, the means will be endangered, thereby exhausting all roots of virtue. Do not be arrogant, thinking, "I am virtuous," and do not despise others as immoral. If one despises others merely because of being virtuous, because of that contempt, that person is called immoral. As it is said, one will fall into the category of the immoral. Therefore, rely on the great compassion that accords with the Dharma, and vow to abandon all the faults of treating sentient beings as friends. If one still feels that one cannot abandon even one fault of sentient beings, one should feel ashamed. Eighth, mindfulness gathered by the five limbs is: immediately repenting upon remembering the transgressions committed in the past, which is mindfulness based on the past extreme. Even if transgressions occur in the future, repenting according to the Dharma is like donning the armor of the future extreme of mindfulness. Transgressions that occur in the present should be repented immediately, rising from the seat like a skilled warrior quickly correcting a mistake, or even if one cannot rise immediately, one should not let the transgression linger overnight, just as the great ocean does not associate with corpses, which is mindfulness based on the middle extreme. Wherever one dwells, with whomever one associates, whatever one enjoys, whatever one does, and however one proceeds, one will not violate the bodhisattva's training, and one will not interrupt the attainment of great enlightenment for the sake of others.
