It is just as it is said in the sutras that there is no fault in being overwhelmed by afflictions and arising again and again because they are very strong. However, just as one would drive away a black snake that quickly spreads poison when it comes into one's lap, or drive away a female yak that steals crops, one must abandon something that one does not accept as soon as it arises. Branka Jo Tsun asked Geshe Tonpa what to do when one cannot abandon it in that way. Geshe Tonpa said that when one cannot abandon it in that way, one should not promise to enter (that state). This is what Sharawa Chenpo said. Regarding the meaning of Brahmacharya, the Dampe Chö Ngönpa says that Brahma means Nirvana, and it is called Brahmacharya because one studies in order to attain Nirvana. Here, in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, when asked whether Bodhisattvas need sons and wives, it is said that some need sons and wives, and some do not, and abide in the form of a youth. As Sharawa said, among the two cases of becoming enlightened in the form of a youth and not becoming enlightened in the form of a youth, the Bhagavan Manjushri promised to become enlightened in the form of a youth. Therefore, "Brahmacharya should be practiced," which means that until Buddhahood is attained, one promises not to be defiled by worldly dharmas. Becoming enlightened not in the form of a youth is to hold the support of whatever ability is greatest for the benefit of sentient beings. Like the Yerpa's prayer, we must also make vows as before. In Ra-sgreng (located in Linzhou County, Lhasa), someone sarcastically asked a friend of varying status, Geshe Tonpa, "From that Nepalese man chiseling stones to this Chinese woman weaving silk, is it okay to do business and not exceed the boundaries? Is it okay to own about a hundred women and also be a virtuous monk?" Geshe Tonpa replied, "Generate the wisdom of the path of seeing, and it will be possible." It is said that before that, he had said in an unquestionable tone that it was not allowed. The Tenth Bhumi Sutra says that even for those who have attained the Bodhisattva grounds, if they are in the ordained state, they have additional qualities. For beginners, the householder's state is a support with harm, because it is full of harm, so there are many obstacles to learning. One should rely on the ordained state, which is free from harm.

Because it is necessary, the splendor of celibacy is supreme. As it is said, until enlightenment is attained, one should practice celibacy, which is not defiled by the desire for the dharma of death, and one should abandon all desires, both internal and external, and the ten non-virtuous deeds of sin. Alternatively, since the former internal desire is included in the vow of celibacy, this shows the abandonment of external desires. Or, sin is desire, which is a characteristic of the degradation of desire itself, as Sharawa said. Geshe also said, "Potowa once said, 'Abandon sin and desire.' The above is the vow of the discipline of vows. Then the two lines are the accumulation of virtue, and the following is the vow of the discipline of benefiting sentient beings." Everyone wrote annotations to emphasize this. Later, all those who hoped to become wise wrote such annotations. I thought at the time, will it become like this? Geshe did not say, so he did not speak. Geshe rebuked, saying, "It seems that things will become like that, but the discipline of vows is the three disciplines. For these three disciplines, just as the Buddhas of the three times learned, I also like it, so I will follow them to learn," this is what he often said. The vow of the discipline of the Bodhisattva's vows, and the accumulation of virtue, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, I like these three disciplines very much. I will also follow how the Buddhas of the three times learned these three disciplines. After learning like that, do I desire to obtain the fruit of perfect enlightenment as quickly as possible? I do not desire that way, so what do I desire? First, place all sentient beings on the ground of Buddhahood, and then want to become a Buddha myself. If even one sentient being remains, even if that sentient being must remain in samsara until the very end because of their own karma, I am willing to stay there. Sharawa said, "A Bodhisattva who is greedy for pleasure wants to become a Buddha himself first, and then benefit others through his activities, and there is another who is not like that, not leaving a single sentient being in his hands."
