Since all meanings arise from the mind, one should be skilled in its rituals. Having received the Bodhisattva vows oneself and not having broken them, one should abide in those vows. One should not be very old or ill, so that one can endure the physical actions of bestowing the vows. Without looking to material gain, one should have the great compassion and desire to give the vows. If one possesses these four qualities, one should know that one is a good lama for the purpose of receiving the entrance. So it is said. Shara'wa said: A lama should possess four qualities. First, one should make requests. Then, if one is able, one should give offerings and so on. Then, one should also extensively explain the benefits of the Bodhisattva vows. One should also speak of the basis of what is to be learned, including the heavy and light offenses. Then, one should have them prostrate and make offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the three times in the ten directions who reside on the great earth, and have them meditate on these qualities. After that, one should manifest the image of the Tathagata and make offerings well, and then again have them make requests, have them meditate on joy, and ask about obstacles. Then, after explaining what is to be learned, one should request the Buddhas of the ten directions to know, and one should not easily proclaim it to those who do not have faith. At all times, one should be able to tame the minds of the disciples, and one should be a wise person who is skilled in all rituals without needing to rely on others. Having received the Bodhisattva vows oneself and not having broken them, one therefore abides in the vows. In the chapter on ethics, it says: Even if one is wise, one should not receive (vows) from those who do not have faith in the cause and effect of the Great Vehicle, who abide in aspects contrary to the six perfections, and who slander the Bodhisattva Pitaka and its mother texts, which are the cause of corrupting wisdom. This is the meaning of what was said. It seems that all the vows we are now bestowing are only those cases. It seems that the Geshe of the monastery gives whatever is asked for. In Burang of Yumo, a person named Jowo Tsun has also explained many methods of practice. It seems that there has been a bestowing of vows for the completion and aspiration entrance, and all the actions of a master. After all of that had passed, from the tradition of the Kadampas, there was no bestowing of entrance for a long time. Later, the Presence granted permission, but not to everyone. At the time of his passing, Putowa secretly...

When granting permission, even if one is already proficient in scriptures, it is hoped to eliminate the fault of (the teacher) saying, "This and this cannot be accepted." It is not that the basis is deteriorated due to old age and illness, but because one can prostrate and bend down when praying for the knowledge of the Buddhas of the ten directions, it is said to be capable of bestowing vows. Because one does not even look at a little bit of wealth, it is said to be compassionate. Moreover, compassion is not only for that one disciple, but extends to all sentient beings, so there must be a thought that "after this person obtains the vows, he will become the protector and refuge of all sentient beings." According to the tradition of the masters, the seven-branch offering is performed in detail beforehand. According to the tradition of the noble ones, only the two, aspiration and action, as well as prostration and offering, are performed beforehand. These are the rituals where the object exists. For the existence of the object, one does not say, "I will bestow the vows." It is like entrusting goods to you, but you do not send them; I teach the Dharma, but you do not listen. One does not say that one is forced to take vows without being able to be devious. It is said that it must be someone who has the characteristics. Secondly, for the ritual of taking from the Buddhas of the ten directions with faith when the object does not actually exist. It is divided into three parts: the need to explain it, the source from which it is explained, and the actual ritual of how to explain it. The first part is: If, after such effort, if one does not find (a teacher), then other than that, the correct ritual for receiving vows should be explained. It is said that, as a person who is the basis, one who has reached the level of wisdom to receive the action, for the situation of receiving from an actual teacher, just like the way of eliminating doubts in the past, if there is one in India, I will go there, just like saying this, even if it is to receive the teacher of the action, no matter where in India, China, or Jambudvipa one can go, one goes without fear of hardship. However, if, as mentioned above, one has the four characteristics, if there is no teacher at all, or even if there is, but there are faults such as obstacles to one's life or celibacy in going there and one cannot find it, then one abandons the ritual of receiving from an actual teacher, and in front of the Buddhas of the ten directions, with one's own faith, one receives the vows of a Bodhisattva,
