Because it generates all of one's own Buddha-dharmas, it is said to be like a seed. Sharawa said: If a single seed does not fall into the ground, no matter what one does, such as plowing, digging, sowing, or irrigating, not even a single green sprout will appear, let alone fruit. Similarly, if the mind of enlightenment, like a single seed, does not arise, no matter what one does, such as the practices of the perfections, meditating on emptiness, or contemplating the vast form of a deity, or meditating on the channels, wheels, and bindus, not even a sprout of the path of seeing will arise, let alone attaining the fruit of omniscient wisdom. The results of generosity and so on, which are not grasped by the mind of enlightenment, are merely enjoyment, a basis for happy migrations, a perfect form and retinue, the accomplishment of actions, and rebirth as a god in the higher realms. Even if one meditates on emptiness, one will not see it. Even if one sees it broadly, one will fall into the Hearer's path. Now, people think that if there is emptiness, that alone is enough. It seems that great yogis have directly seen emptiness, and that there is no obstruction to any walls. Geshe Tonpa said that Jowo (referring to Atisha) said that this is falling into the Hearer's path, so he had them cultivate loving-kindness and compassion from the root. Putowa said that if there is no mind of enlightenment, even mantra will fall into the Hearer's path. Someone was unhappy about this and asked a monastic, who said: Of course it will fall, it will even go to the hell realm. Therefore, the deity's form, the great seal, and so on, are symbols of the four: mantra yoga, mother tantra, Yamantaka, and Guhyasamaja. If there is no wheel of protection of the mind of enlightenment, no matter which of these one practices, most will become mixed practices, and one will not attain accomplishment. Even if one attains accomplishment, it will only be a small common accomplishment, and one will not attain the accomplishment of the great seal at all. Second, the benefit of benefiting others is that it increases the white crop of sentient beings, so it is said to be like a field. Sharawa said: The fruit necessarily follows the seed, so the seed is a unique cause, and the field is like a common condition. Just as the seed is a unique cause, the vehicle

are the generation of the mind of each of the three types of individuals, and so on. The common cause is the mind of bodhicitta, and it is distinguished by the mind of bodhicitta. As the sutra says: If the bodhisattva is in the world, then the human world is in the world. It is said that even between the Thus-gone-one, the destroyer, the perfectly complete Buddha, is in the world. Therefore, harming a bodhisattva is said to be harming all sentient beings. Third, the benefit of abandoning the opposing side is: just as it is impossible for a person of the erect-haired race to throw a short spear and not be hit, or to be hit and not die, so it is impossible for all those who have generated bodhicitta not to become an antidote to afflictions or not to be defeated. It is said to be like a short spear because it defeats the enemy of afflictions. That is, all afflictions arise from the nature of the three roots of non-virtue, and bodhicitta arises from the nature of the three roots of virtue, so it is the key to opposition. Just as darkness that has existed for a million years can be dispelled by a single lamp, if it has not become an antidote to afflictions, it cannot be said that bodhicitta has arisen. It is like a picture of fire drawn on a wall, which cannot burn anything because it is not real fire. This is what Sharawa the Great said. Similarly, because it causes the head of afflictions to fall, it is like a sword, and because it cuts down the tree of afflictions, it is like an axe. For all of these, Geshe himself said: It seems that abandoning the root of afflictions, the view of the aggregates, is actually done by wisdom, but through the lineage, it will become the benefit of bodhicitta, because without it, immaculate wisdom itself will not arise. He also said that everything from the thoughts of this life to seeking one's own liberation, and the opposing side of the perfections, from stinginess to clinging to things, is called improper attention. Whether or not one has generated bodhicitta, it is necessary to know whether or not that improper attention has ceased. Improper attention has ceased
