Whatever kind of driving into the enclosure is done, it is the same. Now, because they are not familiar with the Dharma and do not know how to practice, who among the holders of the Vinaya, who are the masters of the teachings, and the Sangha itself, and the most diligent practitioners within, and all the other holders of the scriptures, does not abuse livestock? The flesh of those animals is not rotten by itself, and their noses are not pierced by themselves; rather, they themselves take them as tools. All the beatings and bindings, are they not the realm of hell and of us gods? To presume that it is done for the pretas is also not right. Mostly it is done to humans and animals, and even to humans themselves, there are those who are subjected to iron punishment, thrown into pits, tied to pillars on their heads, and so on. All these things that ordinary people would not think of, we ourselves do. The livestock in the Kham area that carry heavy loads all suffer severe abuse every morning. If we ourselves have a little burden, we worry about repaying the kindness later, but we impose heavy burdens on livestock. Many die under the load, their eyes bulge out, and they die in the enclosure. All the livestock of ordinary people, even when they should be fattened, we shave off all their hair. Just being diligent in taking refuge is not enough to avoid abusing livestock. Ger Gom Dorje Phag of Ra Do went to Tsang to study. He met Jowo Yemar, who came from both above and below, and requested refuge. Later, when he was living in Gona with Potowa, a shepherd asked him to take care of the sheep and goats for those who were going up from there, but he refused, saying that there was a fault of driving them into the enclosure. Potowa said that there would be no fault, and there was no need to be so careful. Beating, binding, and driving into the enclosure, all these become faults, and there must be an intention of hatred or harm as a prerequisite. To confine livestock in houses and other places with the intention of harming them, so that they cannot go to other places, is called driving into the enclosure. If it is to drive them for protection or as friends of servants, or to urge them a little when carrying goods for the sake of Dharma due to circumstances, there is no fault. Someone asked, how to do back treatment? He replied, why pierce the back? At that time, only those who have already taken refuge can perform the treatment. Chakawa said, each being empty, that livestock carries people
