May the earth increase. The true path is the Dharma, and the companions for practicing the path are the Sangha. Without relying on these three, it is impossible to achieve. Therefore, relying on them for this purpose is called special refuge. Although having faith by knowing that it is a refuge is from the first bhumi onwards, before that, it is necessary to have a belief in the refuge. Therefore, from a young age, meditate on the greatness of the Three Jewels of refuge. During this time, the lama gives encouragement, thereby generating a faith that seems to be seen with one's own eyes. Even if kneeling or squatting, with a respectful posture, join the palms of the hands and recite the refuge three times. Before taking refuge in this way, also manifest love and compassion for all sentient beings, and also manifest the greatness of the Three Jewels. Generate the perception of the Buddha in the virtuous friend, and also remember the continuum of one's own aggregates, which are like dreams and illusions, and arbitrarily assign their respective names. The lama will ask questions and have the disciples practice, and will also allow them to rest in between, and give these instructions, saying that he will have them practice. It is said that only Geshe Tonpa has all these complete practices. Yogis and monks of monasteries initially did not have these practices, and later the Geshes bestowed their grace. The people of Sangpu Monastery say that this is the result of Atisha's kindness spreading. It is said that when Potowa went to attend the consecration ceremony of Geshe Tonpa's stupa, he heard that a group of people were generating bodhicitta, and he was very happy to go and see, but he found that they were just performing a retreat ceremony. Therefore, whoever you take refuge in, you must protect his teachings. For example, whoever you take refuge in, you must accomplish his work and protect his laws. If you do not do so, not only will you not receive the benefits of relying on him, but you will also face the danger of punishment for violating them. Or, if you rely on a king and abide by his laws, you will be considered the king's people; if you do not abide by the laws, you will not be considered the king's people. Similarly, if you take refuge in the Three Jewels and do not protect their teachings, you will incur faults that contradict them, or you will not be considered a Buddhist, so you must learn their teachings. That is, Sha

The great venerable one said: The uncommon is like what is said in the Compendium of Perfections, which seems to come only from the meditation on the nature of aspirational bodhicitta. The common has three individual trainings and four general trainings. All of these become uncommon if one thinks that they obstruct the attainment of Buddhahood for the sake of others and protects them by abandoning that thought. Whatever vows one has taken, such as individual liberation, all of those trainings should be constantly recited and meditated upon, which is the oral instruction. It is said: Regarding this, among the three individual trainings of the Three Jewels, the first is taking refuge in the Buddha Jewel, therefore one should not prostrate to other gods, nor offer flowers and incense, etc., and there is no fault in giving torma with compassion. Thus one should train. Furthermore, that same Geshe said: Even if one prostrates to other gods, one does not think that one has abandoned taking refuge in the Buddha, nor does one regard them as a refuge from the depths of one's heart. However, abandoning taking refuge in the Buddha is like when the householder Anathapindika went to the royal palace to deliver the bride price, everyone was busy, and when asked, they said they were inviting the Buddha. Hearing the sound of the Buddha, relying on the habits of previous lives, he awoke and had no chance to sleep, and he had faith in the Buddha. When the light of the Buddha pervaded the city, the householder wondered if it was dawn or the light of the Buddha. To verify, he went to the city gate and saw a worldly deity statue and prostrated to it. Although he had no intention of taking refuge, just by prostrating, darkness fell. That's how the story goes. This is not because the Buddha is jealous, but because the greatness of dependent origination is such. The so-called other gods are the gods worshiped by outsiders. Most people say that Brahma is a god, and he is a god of the form realm. The violent one and the son of Pleiades and the wealth god, etc., are the attendants. The sun and moon and Ishvara and Vishnu, etc., are mostly gods of the four great king lineages. It is said that with their wisdom, they do not even know what will happen tomorrow. They do not even know what will happen now. As for power, when the time of one's death arrives, one does not even have the power to extend one or two breaths. Because there is no compassion, it is read.
